Martin Terrier weighs return to Ligue 1 amid Rennes and Marseille interest

Two years after swapping Brittany for the Bundesliga, Martin Terrier is edging towards a way back home.

The Bayer Leverkusen forward, now 29, is in talks over a return to Ligue 1, with former club Rennes and rivals Marseille both pushing to bring him back to France, according to Foot Mercato.

An interrupted German adventure

Terrier’s move to Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen was meant to launch him into a new dimension. It never quite happened.

Seven goals in 44 appearances tell the story of a stop-start spell in Germany. The bigger story sits in the treatment room. A serious Achilles injury last year cut through his momentum and left him fighting more for fitness than for a starting place in a side that has surged under Alonso.

He still has three years left on his contract with the Werkself, but the pull of home is strong. So is the promise of a fresh start in a league where he once looked like one of the most complete forwards in the country.

Uncapped by France despite his peak years in Ligue 1, Terrier now stands at a crossroads: stay as a squad option in a dominant German side, or return to a league that knows his name and his game.

Rennes reunion on the table

Rennes know exactly what they would be getting.

Terrier spent three standout seasons there, evolving into the club’s attacking reference point between 2020 and 2023. His intelligence between the lines, his timing in the box, his ability to score from range – all of it turned him into a fan favourite at Roazhon Park.

Talks are under way between the player and Rennes over a potential reunion. The timing is not accidental. Les Bretons are bracing themselves for possible movement in their attack, with Switzerland international Breel Embolo attracting interest.

If Embolo moves on, Rennes will need guaranteed quality in the final third. Terrier, if fit, offers exactly that and arrives with the advantage of already knowing the club, the environment, and the expectations.

Marseille enter the race

Rennes, though, do not have a clear run.

Marseille have also placed Terrier on their shortlist as they rebuild their frontline ahead of a season in the UEFA Europa League. The departures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mason Greenwood have ripped out a chunk of OM’s attacking firepower. At least one new striker must arrive. Preferably one who can score, link play, and handle the pressure of the Vélodrome.

Terrier ticks those boxes. There is another factor in Marseille’s favour: Bruno Genesio.

The current OM coach knows Terrier’s game inside out after working with him during his most prolific spell at Rennes between 2021 and 2023. Under Genesio, Terrier produced the sharpest football of his career. The prospect of reuniting with a coach who trusts him and knows how to use him will not be lost on the player.

For Marseille, chasing a forward already moulded by their manager makes obvious sense. For Terrier, the chance to step into a major French club, back in Europe, under a familiar coach, is a powerful proposition.

A decisive summer

So the picture is clear. A Leverkusen forward with three years on his deal, bruised by injuries but not by doubt in his own ability. A former club ready to welcome him back. A giant of French football offering a different kind of stage.

Rennes or Marseille. Stability or a leap. Return to what he knows, or test himself in one of the most demanding atmospheres in Europe.

Terrier’s next move will not just define the next chapter of his career. It will say a lot about his ambitions at 29 – and about which Ligue 1 project really believes he can still be a leading man.
