Maseko's Transfer to FC Copenhagen Finalized
Mamelodi Sundowns and FC Copenhagen have thrashed out a transfer fee for Thapelo Maseko, clearing the last major hurdle for the winger’s switch to Denmark.
The 22-year-old is set to travel for his medical before the weekend. If he passes, the deal will be signed off and his time at Chloorkop will officially be over.
It ends a turbulent spell for a player who, on the international stage, has just delivered the biggest moments of his young career. Maseko lit up Bafana Bafana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, scoring the winner against South Korea as South Africa punched through to the knockout phase for the first time in their history.
Yet while his star rose in national colours, his status at Sundowns dimmed.
Left out in the cold
Despite his World Cup heroics, Sundowns omitted Maseko from their pre-season tour of Austria last month. The decision raised eyebrows and underlined what many inside the club already knew: the relationship had run its course.
Maseko had already told the technical team he wanted a fresh start. Head coach Miguel Cardoso confirmed publicly that the attacker had expressed a desire to leave, a clear signal that the club and player were moving in different directions.
It is a sharp turn from how this story began. Sundowns signed Maseko from SuperSport United in July 2023 after a breakout season with Matsatsantsa, a move that looked like the natural next step for one of the PSL’s most exciting young talents.
Instead, his minutes dried up. Competition intensified, opportunities shrank, and by the second half of last season he had slipped down the pecking order.
Loan revival in Cyprus
Sundowns sent him on loan to AEL Limassol for the final six months of the campaign. The change of scenery worked. Maseko rediscovered his rhythm in Cyprus, sharpened his form, and forced his way back into the Bafana Bafana setup.
The stint, though, came with problems of its own. The public broadcaster reported that payment issues marred the closing months of his time at AEL Limassol, leaving the player reluctant to consider a permanent return to Cyprus.
So when Copenhagen came calling with a concrete offer, the path became clear.
Following a famous trail
Copenhagen’s decision to buy Maseko outright hands him a second chance in Europe, this time at a club with clear ambitions on the continental stage. It also places him on a familiar path for South African fans.
He now follows in the footsteps of Sibusiso Zuma, the Bafana Bafana legend who became a cult hero in Denmark. Zuma made 188 appearances and scored 53 goals for Copenhagen after joining them in 2000, carving out one of the most successful European careers by a South African player.
Maseko’s challenge is different, the landscape tougher, the scrutiny sharper. But the opportunity is there: a clean break from a difficult Sundowns spell, a stable European platform, and the chance to turn World Cup momentum into a long-term career at the top level.
