Mason Greenwood's Potential Move to Fenerbahce: What it Means for Manchester United
Manchester United will be watching the next few weeks with more interest than most as Mason Greenwood’s future edges towards another major twist – and a potentially significant financial payoff for Old Trafford.
The academy graduate, who left United for Marseille in 2024, is at the centre of a developing transfer story, with Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi claiming the Turkish club have already struck a deal with the forward over a four-year contract.
“We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood,” Safi announced, stating that the 24-year-old had agreed to join Fenerbahce “during the most valuable and productive years of his career.”
If that promise is delivered, it could be lucrative for United.
United’s stake in Greenwood’s next move
When United sanctioned Greenwood’s £26 million switch to Marseille, they built in a substantial 40 per cent sell-on clause. It was a clear acknowledgement that, if his career reignited elsewhere, they wanted a slice of the upside.
That decision now looks shrewd.
Greenwood has rebuilt his on-pitch reputation in France. For Marseille last season, he produced 16 goals and seven assists in 32 Ligue 1 appearances, numbers that inevitably dragged him back into the European market. Roma, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus have all been linked, but the most concrete noise now comes from Istanbul.
Fenerbahce’s interest has moved beyond rumour. Safi has gone public, talking up Greenwood as the star signing he promised to deliver in his campaign. The player, he insists, has already committed in principle.
The deal is far from finished, though. Personal terms may be in place, but the real battle lies between Fenerbahce and Marseille.
Marseille’s stance and the numbers in play
Marseille are under no pressure to give Greenwood away. Having missed out on Champions League qualification, they are open to a sale, but only at their price. Reports in France suggest they want around £47.5 million for the forward.
If a club pays that in full, United’s 40 per cent slice would be worth roughly £19 million. For a player who no longer has a pathway back into the first team at Old Trafford, that would represent a sizeable financial boost and a rare example of a sell-on clause working exactly as intended.
Marseille sporting director Gregory Lorenzi has been careful with his words, but he has not hidden the fact that Greenwood is central to their summer calculations.
“He is one of the players that we are really thinking about [with regard to] their future,” Lorenzi told L’Equipe. “If an opportunity presents itself, naturally, we will think about it. But there is the club's position [and] that of the player. It is also up to us to manage internally to find the best possible solution for all parties.”
The message is clear: Marseille are open, but only on their terms, and Greenwood’s own wishes will carry weight.
From Old Trafford to Istanbul?
Greenwood’s resurgence in France has shifted him from a player in limbo to a sought-after forward in a single season. A move from Ligue 1 to the Turkish Super Lig would mark another sharp turn in a career already defined by dramatic changes of direction.
For United, the equation is simpler. They are no longer shaping Greenwood’s future, but they are heavily invested in where he goes next. Every negotiation between Marseille and Fenerbahce, every million added or shaved off the fee, has a direct impact on their summer budget.
If Fenerbahce can meet Marseille’s demands, United will profit from a player they developed but no longer employ. If the talks stall or another club steps in, the numbers change again.
The agreement over personal terms suggests momentum is building. The real question now is whether Fenerbahce – or any other suitor – are prepared to pay the price that unlocks both Marseille’s sale and United’s windfall.
