The noise around Matteo Ruggeri’s future at Atlético de Madrid has been loud for weeks. His agent has just turned it off.
Tullio Tinti, speaking to Sky Sport Italy and relayed by Into The Calderón, has made it clear: the 24-year-old Italian left-back is not leaving Madrid this summer. Roma asked. Fiorentina asked. Nottingham Forest had a look in January. The answer, Tinti insists, has always been the same.
He’s staying.
Spanish Reports Hit a Dead End
That stance cuts directly against the drumbeat from Spain in recent weeks. Local reports had framed Ruggeri as a likely sacrifice, a sellable asset Atlético could move on to free up money for fresh signings, with director of football Mateu Alemany supposedly ready to cash in.
That storyline has run into a wall.
Tinti acknowledged the interest, but underlined that Ruggeri was never on the market. He went further, calling his client’s season “extraordinary” and stressing that both player and club want to continue together.
It’s a flattering spin on a year that was more complicated than that word suggests.
A Season of Surges and Stumbles
Ruggeri arrived from Atalanta last July for under €20 million, tied down on a long-term deal until 2030. The first months were rocky. He needed time to adjust to Diego Simeone’s demands, to the pace and physicality of LaLiga, to the scrutiny that comes with playing for a club that expects to be in the Champions League knockout rounds every year.
Then something clicked around January.
Across a 17-game stretch from late January to early April, Ruggeri became a genuine attacking outlet. He delivered seven assists in that run, his crossing suddenly a real weapon from the left. He played his part in Atlético’s Champions League quarterfinal upset of FC Barcelona, contributing to a tie that reshaped how the season will be remembered at the Metropolitano.
Yet the flaws never fully disappeared. His form in the league remained patchy, the defensive side of his game still raw. One-on-one, he could be exposed. In the Copa del Rey final, as Atlético fell to Real Sociedad on penalties, Ruggeri struggled badly. On nights like that, “extraordinary” feels more like an agent’s vocabulary than a scout’s report.
Julio Díaz Exit Changes the Picture
The landscape around him has shifted, though.
Over the weekend, fellow left-back Julio Díaz agreed a move to Sevilla. That decision cleared a traffic jam on Simeone’s left flank. When World Cup winner Álex Grimaldo arrived as the new first-choice left-back, Ruggeri looked like the obvious candidate to move on, a saleable deputy in a position suddenly crowded.
Díaz’s departure changes that equation. Ruggeri now has a defined lane: backup to Grimaldo and rotational starter, with clear minutes available across LaLiga, cup competitions, and Europe heading into 2026-27.
For Atlético, in a summer of ongoing reconstruction higher up the pitch, keeping him simplifies at least one part of the squad puzzle. They retain depth at left-back, even if they forgo what might have been one of their cleaner routes to a significant sale.
What a Second Season Means for Ruggeri
The immediate saga is over. The more interesting question lies ahead.
What does another year as a number two do for Ruggeri’s trajectory?
His strengths are obvious. He can whip in a cross, he times his runs well, and when the team has the ball he looks comfortable and confident. But Simeone’s trust is built on defensive reliability, and that remains the weak seam. Against top opposition, his one-on-one defending still makes him a risk.
Stay as a backup, and his market value probably drifts sideways or dips. Break into the side regularly and iron out the errors, and the narrative flips. Atlético are in no rush either way: a contract to 2030 gives them full control over when and how they cash in if Serie A comes calling again.
For now, Ruggeri knows where he’ll be when the new season starts. The question is not whether he stays in Madrid.
It’s whether he can turn a secure role on the depth chart into something bigger than that.
