Mbappé Denies Rift with Dembélé Amid Ballon d'Or Speculation

What started as a line in an interview has turned into a mini-saga around France’s two attacking stars. Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé, once side by side at PSG and now carrying the hopes of a nation again, found themselves at the centre of speculation over a supposed clash linked to the Ballon d'Or.

It began on 11 September, in an interview with France Football. Mbappé, asked about his chances of lifting the Ballon d'Or in London on 26 October, drew a comparison between his own rise and Dembélé’s more uneven journey.

“He has always been considered a talented player. I have always been seen as the chosen one. I was at the top from the start. He had a different path, injuries, but he recovered well,” the Real Madrid forward said, reflecting on his former PSG teammate.

The phrase “the chosen one” stuck. It followed him.

Two days later, Dembélé answered. Not by naming Mbappé, but by picking up that exact expression and turning it back on its head. Speaking on Ligue 1+, the latest Ballon d'Or winner underlined how he sees his own story.

“Throughout my entire career, I haven't said a single word, I have worked very hard. As I said, I have never been the chosen one, but I have worked hard, and last year I was rewarded with a fantastic season at PSG. And this year, we'll see, no pressure, calm.”

Those words were enough to ignite debate. Was this a veiled jab? A quiet rebuttal? As the France squad regrouped, the narrative wrote itself: two stars, one individual prize, one loaded label.

The reunion in camp only cranked up the noise. Every gesture was examined, every smile measured. Were they still in sync? Was there something brewing beneath the surface?

Mbappé has now moved to stamp all that out.

Speaking to L’Équipe while attending an event for his new sponsor, the France captain insisted there is no fracture, no feud, not even a flicker of tension between him and Dembélé.

“I’ve already talked it over with him and no, there are no tensions. He is a friend. I really think there is no problem at all in that regard, I’m very calm,” said the number 10, cutting straight through the speculation.

For Mbappé, the whole episode says more about the environment around the national team than about any personal relationship. The Nations League window, a high-profile France camp, a Ballon d'Or race wide open — all the ingredients for a talking point.

“During the Nations League period and with the French national team, you always have to look for a topic of debate, and I think this one is very well chosen,” he added, with a hint of irony.

The Ballon d'Or will be settled in London. The verdict on their partnership, though, will come much closer to home — on the pitch, in blue, where labels like “chosen one” matter far less than the way they combine when it counts.
