Memphis Depay's Outburst Against Corinthians Over Contract Dispute
Memphis Depay has launched a blistering attack on Corinthians after the Brazilian club confirmed they will not renew his contract, leaving the Dutch forward suddenly out of work and seething.
The 32-year-old took to social media to accuse the São Paulo giants of breaking their word, claiming a two-year extension had already been agreed at the highest level of the club.
“Very disappointed to read that Corinthians decided not to honour our agreement in place to extend my contract for 2 more years,” Depay wrote in a statement on X. “This renewal was explicitly agreed upon by the president as well as the sporting, legal and financial department. Some people decided however to breach this engagement.
“I didn't want this situation and always respected the club throughout the process, but now I am forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests. In the upcoming days I will speak publicly but rest assured that I will not leave this unacceptable behaviour unsanctioned.”
Those words landed like a bomb at Neo Quimica Arena. A player who, when fit, had become the face of the project under Fernando Diniz now stands on the outside, promising a fierce response.
Corinthians dig in behind ‘financial health’
Corinthians moved quickly to put their version of events on the record. In a long, carefully worded statement, the club framed Depay’s departure as a painful but unavoidable step to protect its future.
“Sport Club Corinthians Paulista has decided not to renew the contract of athlete Memphis Depay,” the note began. “This decision was taken solely and exclusively in consideration of the financial health of our institution, which demands rigorous balance and responsibility in the management of available resources.
“We would like to express our deep gratitude to player Memphis Depay and his entire team, who from the start of negotiations sought the best possible agreement.”
The message was clear: admiration for the player, but no room in the budget.
Corinthians stressed that the drawn-out process reflected the stature of the former Lyon and Barcelona forward rather than any lack of respect.
“We understand that the process extended beyond the traditional deadline, but this is mainly due to the fact that we are dealing with a distinguished athlete. The Board also recognises and values the tireless efforts of all the institution’s departments that worked to make the athlete’s stay feasible.”
Behind the polite language lies a stark admission. The club insists its current and future obligations simply cannot stretch to the kind of package required to keep a high-profile international like Depay.
“Given Corinthians’ current and future financial obligations, it became clear that taking on a new commitment of this magnitude would not be compatible, at this moment, with the financial balance we need to preserve to ensure the institution’s sustainability,” the statement continued. “We recognise that this was a difficult decision, but undoubtedly necessary for the future of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista.
“We thank everyone for their understanding and will continue working so that Corinthians remains strong, solid, and victorious.”
From instant hero to bitter exit
Depay’s frustration stems not only from what he says was a broken promise, but from the impact he had in Brazil when his body allowed it.
Arriving in 2024, he immediately transformed Corinthians’ attack, driving a nine-match winning streak that changed the mood around the club and helped deliver silverware. Across his spell at Neo Quimica Arena, he played a central role in securing three major trophies, including the Copa do Brasil, underlining his status as a marquee figure when available.
Injuries disrupted that momentum and complicated any long-term planning. Yet Depay clearly believed his performances and prior talks had already secured his future in black and white. Corinthians, staring at their balance sheet, reached a different conclusion.
Now the relationship has ruptured in public.
Legal storm on the horizon
The story is far from over. Depay has promised to “sanction” what he calls “unacceptable behaviour”, hinting at legal or disciplinary steps to come. Corinthians, for their part, are preparing to defend their stance.
Club president Osmar Stabile is expected to front a press conference to address the fallout, with Fernando Diniz’s squad left to manage the sporting consequences of losing one of their most gifted players in the middle of a delicate period.
Depay, suddenly a free agent again, will not be short of suitors. The question is whether his next move comes before – or after – a courtroom battle with the club he so recently helped drag back to trophies.
