Messi's Farewell: No Tribute Match Planned by Barcelona
Barcelona are not working on a tribute or farewell match for Lionel Messi, despite the club icon moving towards the final stretch of his career.
Journalist Adrian Sanchez has told Barça Universal that, as things stand, there are no concrete plans inside the club to organise any official homage to the Argentine. No dates. No match. No ceremony.
It is a stark reality for a player many regard as the greatest in Barça’s history.
A legend, a wound, and a broken bond
Messi’s place in Barcelona’s story is untouchable. The goals, the titles, the nights when Camp Nou bowed to him alone — all of that remains. What never healed was the way it ended.
The 2021 separation was not driven by footballing logic. Barcelona wanted to keep him. Messi wanted to stay. But La Liga’s financial regulations and wage limits closed the door. Despite Joan Laporta campaigning for the presidency on the promise of renewing Messi’s contract, the club ultimately pulled the offer.
The decision shattered Messi. Forced out, he left for Paris Saint-Germain, his farewell reduced to a tearful press conference instead of a lap of honour.
The fallout did not stop there. The relationship between Messi and Laporta took a heavy hit. Laporta has since admitted that things between them are “not what they used to be” and even recounted an awkward moment at a Ballon d’Or gala, when Messi felt they should not greet one another. For a president and a club legend once so closely aligned, the distance now is striking.
That tension hangs over every conversation about a tribute.
Tribute talk stalls again
Earlier this year, whispers grew louder that Barcelona might finally stage a tribute match for Messi. The idea of bringing him back, even for one night, captured imaginations. Laporta did little to kill the dream, publicly insisting that “Leo deserves a statue at Camp Nou.”
The words sounded like the start of a reconciliation.
But the latest information points in the opposite direction. There is no active project, no formal plan being developed for a farewell event. The club is not moving towards a tribute; it is standing still.
Laporta continues to call Messi a Barcelona legend and has spoken of his hope that their relationship can eventually be repaired. He has also floated the idea that a proper public homage might arrive once the Camp Nou renovation is complete, a grand stage for a grand goodbye.
For now, though, that remains hypothetical. The stadium is being rebuilt. The bond with Messi is not. And the greatest player in Barcelona’s history edges closer to retirement without a clear path back to the pitch where he became immortal.
