Michael Olise: From Bayern Munich to Real Madrid's Galactico Talk
Michael Olise has spent the last five years sprinting through football’s front door. Reading to Crystal Palace. Palace to Bayern Munich. Bayern to a World Cup semi-final. Now the conversation has moved again, to the one club that always hovers over the game’s brightest talents: Real Madrid.
From the Championship in 2021 to the Allianz Arena and the sport’s biggest stage in 2026, the 24-year-old has treated pressure like oxygen. He has not just survived at the top level; he has bent it to his will.
At Bayern, the numbers are outrageous. Twenty-five goals last season. Twenty-eight assists. Two Bundesliga titles alongside Harry Kane and a forward line that rarely stops scoring. He arrived from Palace for £51 million and has already made that fee look like a clerical error.
His performances in North America at the World Cup only pushed his reputation higher. In a France side loaded with attacking royalty – Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and more – Olise still found room to shine. He delivered on the big stage, even if, as Jeremie Aliadiere points out, not all of those standout displays came against the very elite.
“Going to that French squad, same. Great World Cup, even if I would say he's had great games against teams that might not be at the level of Spain,” Aliadiere told GOAL, speaking in association with Wiz Slots. “It's always very easy to judge a semi-final, are you playing Spain?”
That is the backdrop to the latest twist. In Madrid, the talk is of another ‘Galactico’. Reports suggest Real are weighing up a staggering €223m (£191m/$254m) move that would make Olise the most expensive footballer in history, nudging Neymar off the top of that particular pedestal. It is the kind of figure that changes dressing rooms, wage structures, egos.
And yet, Aliadiere urges a pause.
“He's had an incredible season since leaving Palace and going to Bayern Munich, he's gone to a different level,” the former Arsenal forward said. The leap from London to Bavaria has already been huge; the next one, to the Bernabeu, would be something else again.
Madrid’s puzzle: where does Olise fit?
The question is not just whether Real Madrid want Olise. It is where they would put him.
“Olise, I think he's incredible, he's such an amazing talent,” Aliadiere said. “Where would he fit in Madrid? How would they work with Vinicius, with [Jude] Bellingham, with all the other players?”
This is not the early-2000s, when the original Galacticos were assembled with almost reckless abandon. Back then, Real stacked the front of the team with brilliance and trusted the rest to sort itself out. Modern football is less forgiving.
“I remember the Galacticos back in the day where you just had amazing players but I still think you need a bit of a good balance and a strong defence because modern football, you get punished quite quickly,” Aliadiere warned.
Real, under Jose Mourinho, would need to knit Olise into an attack already built around Vinicius Junior and Bellingham, with others jostling for space and status. It is a luxury problem, but a problem all the same.
The weight of a long season
Aliadiere’s view of Olise’s next step is framed by what he saw at the World Cup: great players, but exhausted ones. The margins at the very top, he argues, are often physical rather than emotional.
“They've had a long tournament, they've had a long season. Again, at the end of the tournament, players are getting tired, emotions are just high,” he said. “There's players that looked exhausted and you look at England and the last 25 minutes, you could have put 15 English players on the pitch, they were knackered, they couldn't run, they had nothing left in the tank. Compared to Argentina, who just looked like they could carry on running, making runs. And sometimes it's easy to say it's not passion or desire, it's just when you can't run anymore. It's just one of those things.”
Olise has handled that intensity well so far. Bayern’s schedule, France’s demands, the spotlight of a World Cup – he has not shrunk. But Madrid is a different kind of strain. Every touch, every decision, every off-day is dissected.
Which is why Aliadiere leans towards patience.
Bayern now, Bernabeu later?
Pressed on whether another year in Munich might be the smarter move for Olise’s development than a record-breaking jump to Spain, Aliadiere did not hesitate.
“For sure,” he said. “I'm sure with what he's produced already and the name he has and what he's done on the bigger stage now, I can't see Madrid being a one-off opportunity, which means you play for Bayern Munich, let's be honest, Bayern Munich, you've got a very good chance, 90% chance of winning the Bundesliga next year, of scoring goals because they're the best team over there. So realistically, you would have another great season at Bayern Munich anyway.
“I agree, I think maybe another year there, having another good season under his belt and then maybe jumping into the big pond at Madrid and see if you're capable of doing it over there with the pressure and everything that comes from that plan for Real Madrid.”
From Bayern’s perspective, there is no urgency to cash in. Olise is under contract until 2029. The club hierarchy has already made it clear they do not intend to let their most valuable asset walk out easily. Any suitor, even Real Madrid, would have to smash records and test every fibre of Bayern’s resolve.
A €223m bid would do exactly that. It would force hard conversations in Munich and Madrid alike. What is a player worth in a market already stretched to breaking point? How much talent can one dressing room carry before balance snaps?
Olise, for now, keeps the door ajar. Real Madrid will always exert a pull on a player of his ambition and profile. Bayern offer trophies, security and a starring role. Madrid offer history, mythology and a different kind of immortality.
When the 2026-27 season kicks off, he cannot be in two places. Does he stay where he is already a star, or step into a stadium where legends are made and careers can be defined – or broken – in a single season?
