Michael Owen on the Mbappé–Haaland Dilemma at Real Madrid

Erling Haaland and Real Madrid have been linked for years. Long before he tore up the Premier League with Manchester City, his goals for Borussia Dortmund had the Bernabéu dreaming.

But Madrid chose a different obsession. They went all‑in on Kylian Mbappé. That decision, according to Michael Owen, still shapes everything.

The former Real Madrid forward, speaking to Skinradar in comments relayed by Defensa Central, doubts there is any realistic path to Haaland while Mbappé is in white.

“As long as Mbappé is there, I don't see them spending that amount to sign Haaland,” Owen said.

The issue, in his eyes, already exists on the left flank. “There are already those who wonder whether Vinícius and Mbappé can play together, because Mbappé likes to play a little to the left side, and there are already questions about that.”

The tactical jigsaw doesn’t get any easier if you swap one piece.

“If the pairing is Mbappé and Haaland, then how will they play together?” he continued. “Will you make Mbappé play on the left side? I think it will be one or the other, honestly. I don't think you can have two of the best out-and-out strikers in the world, Mbappé and Haaland, in the same team. Personally, I don't think they can be part of the same squad.”

So the problem is not just fantasy‑football ambition. It is cost, structure, and balance.

“I mean, it's about the cost, then trying to make that work, and for that to happen, I think Mbappé would be forced to leave,” Owen said. The warning is clear: Madrid have been here before. “They tried the Galácticos idea many years ago, in my generation. Simply gathering the big players is not necessarily the perfect solution.”

Owen made sure to underline his respect for the club, stressing he still holds deep affection and admiration for Real Madrid. But affection is one thing. Trying to squeeze Vinícius, Mbappé and Haaland into the same dressing room – let alone the same starting XI – is quite another.
