Milan vs Dortmund: The Battle for Konstantinos Karetsas

The battle for Konstantinos Karetsas is turning into a straight duel between Milan and Dortmund, with two very different strategies aimed at the same 18-year-old playmaker from KRC Genk.
According to Belgian outlet HLN, Dortmund have already sat down with Genk several times and are back at the table again today. Their opening proposal – €30 million plus €5 million in add-ons – went in, was weighed up, and then knocked back. Genk value the Greece international at around €40 million including bonuses, and for now they are standing firm.
Dortmund’s intent is clear. They are working the deal, pushing on the numbers, testing how close they can get to that €40m mark without blinking first. This is their usual territory: identify a young creator, move early, back the scouting with a serious bid.
Milan are playing a different game.
The same Belgian reports say Amorim personally called Karetsas, laying out his vision for how the teenager would fit into his project at San Siro. No intermediaries, no filtered message – just a coach trying to win a player’s mind before his club can win the auction.
The pitch is simple but bold: trust the project, wait for Milan to make a sale, then watch them commit fully to bringing you in.
It is a gamble. Milan, constrained by the need to move someone out before they can go “all in” on the transfer, are asking an 18-year-old with elite suitors to hold his nerve while the market swirls around him. Dortmund, by contrast, are already deep into negotiations, edging their offer towards Genk’s demands.
So the lines are drawn. On one side, the Bundesliga club pushing with structure, meetings and money. On the other, a Milan coach betting that a direct conversation and a clear role in his new-look side can persuade Karetsas to wait.
The next move belongs to Genk – and to a teenager who suddenly finds two European heavyweights building their summer plans around his decision.
