Mohamed Salah’s next chapter will not unfold in Saudi Arabia, nor in the black and white of Besiktas. It will begin on the Black Sea, in the claret and blue of Trabzonspor.
The Liverpool great has delivered his first message to his new supporters as he closes in on a shock move to the Turkish club, bringing the curtain down on a glittering nine-year spell at Anfield. Earlier this summer, the 34-year-old mutually agreed to terminate the final year of his Liverpool contract, clearing the way for one last major move in Europe.
For weeks, the smart money had him bound for the Saudi Pro League. Besiktas also pushed hard, holding talks over a switch to Istanbul last month before those negotiations collapsed. The chase looked open again.
Trabzonspor pounced.
On Tuesday night, the club confirmed they had entered formal transfer talks with Salah and announced he would land in Trabzon on Wednesday. Hours later came the images that will sting on Merseyside and electrify the Black Sea coast: Salah in a Trabzonspor shirt, smiling, the number 61 on his back – a nod to the city’s telephone code and a symbol of local pride.
The club doubled down with a video shot on his flight to Turkey. Salah, pulling on the shirt for the first time, turned directly to his new audience.
“Trabzon, are you ready?” he said. “I can hear you. See you very soon. Bize Her Yer Trabzon! (Everywhere is Trabzon for us!)”
One line, in the club’s own slogan, instantly plugged him into the culture he is about to enter. The message was clear: this is not a soft landing into semi-retirement; this is a star embracing a football-mad city.
Trabzonspor have confirmed Salah is set to sign a two-year deal. The announcement came with a teaser that left little doubt about the identity of their target: an Egyptian pyramid, released before the formal statement that talks had begun.
“Public Announcement. Negotiations have begun regarding the transfer of professional footballer Mohamed Salah to our Club,” the club said.
They then moved to pin down the details of his arrival, even down to the terminal.
“Professional footballer Mohamed Salah, with whom we have begun transfer negotiations, will be at Istanbul Atatürk Airport General Aviation Terminal at 12:00 on Wednesday, August 5.
“The player is scheduled to arrive in Trabzon on the same day in the evening hours.
“The time and other details regarding the welcome program in Trabzon will be shared with the public through our club's official communication channels during the day.”
The stage is set. From Anfield icon to the new face of Trabzon, Salah’s next act will unfold in front of one of Turkey’s most fervent fanbases, wearing a number that belongs to the city as much as the club.
