Jose Mourinho's Message to Vinicius Jr: Stay at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has revealed the blunt message he delivered to Vinicius Jr as Real Madrid fought to keep their star winger out of Arsenal’s reach this summer.

The 26-year-old had entered the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu, a situation that alerted Premier League champions Arsenal to the possibility of prising away one of the game’s elite wide forwards on a free transfer next year. Talks dragged on. Doubt crept in. But earlier this month, Vinicius ended the speculation by signing a six-year deal to stay in Madrid.

Mourinho, back at Real for a second spell after his return was confirmed in June, says he played his part in that decision – with a typically direct intervention.

On Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, the 63-year-old laid out exactly what he told the Brazilian.

“Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid,” Mourinho said. “The only thing I told him was: ‘Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. You only understand Real Madrid when you leave. When you leave that’s when you realise what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.’”

No long speeches. No soft edges. Just a warning from a coach who has seen enough players walk away from giants and regret it.

Mourinho believes the work done at Valdebebas under his watch since returning has helped convince Vinicius that his future remains in white.

“I think what he has felt in terms of the group’s growth, the way we’ve been working and developing, has given him a very important feeling,” he added.

This is not a relationship that started smoothly. Last season, Mourinho stood in the opposite dugout, facing Real three times in the Champions League while in charge of Benfica. The most explosive night came in their knockout phase play-off first leg, when the match was halted for around eight minutes after Real players alleged that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni had racially abused Vinicius.

Prestianni denied the accusations. Mourinho, then Benfica coach, publicly backed his player. Uefa later investigated and banned Prestianni for three matches, with a further three suspended, but for homophobic conduct, not racism.

The incident left a complicated dynamic: Mourinho defending his own dressing room, Real rallying around Vinicius, and a storm swirling around a young forward at the centre of it all.

Now, with Mourinho in charge at the Bernabeu, those lines have shifted. The Portuguese coach insisted there is no doubt where he stands today.

“Prestianni was my player. That’s it. There’s no debate. If Prestianni is my player, 20 players can come at me and I’m still with Prestianni. End of story,” he said, explaining his stance at the time.

Then came the key line – the one aimed directly at Vinicius.

“I think Vini now knows what side I am now on and knows he can look me in the eye and rely on me to be on his side.”

From adversary to ally, from transfer doubt to a six-year commitment, Mourinho has made his position clear. Vinicius stays. And he does so with a manager who has nailed his colours, and his loyalty, firmly to the Brazilian’s mast.
