Mourinho Faces Midfield Crisis Ahead of Real Madrid v Inter Clash
Real Madrid against Inter Milan under the lights at the Santiago Bernabéu should be pure Champions League theatre. Instead, José Mourinho walks into it juggling suspensions, injuries and a bruising domestic defeat.
Madrid open their new league-phase campaign at 9 p.m. CEST, still stinging from a 1-0 loss to Real Betis. Now they must face one of Europe’s most disciplined sides with a midfield ripped apart.
Mourinho’s Midfield Headache
This is where the alarm bells ring loudest. Three midfielders are suspended. Another key option is still not fully fit. For a manager who likes control in the middle of the pitch, it is a worst-case scenario.

The result: a gaping hole in the heart of the side on a night when rhythm and control will be everything.
Aurélien Tchouaméni sits at the centre of the uncertainty. He has been working his way back from a muscular problem and could return, but Mourinho has not guaranteed he will start. Endrick, also dealing with a muscular issue, remains a doubt after missing the opening matches.
Mourinho has admitted Madrid have “3, 4, or 5 options” to patch up the midfield. He has no intention of revealing which one he will use. Not yet.
What is clear is that he knows the scale of the problem. He has spoken of “known issues” before this match, but insists his side will compete and will play to win. The tone is defiant. The reality is harsh.
Inter Arrive Stronger
Across the touchline, Cristian Chivu’s situation looks far more comfortable.
Inter’s medical bulletin is short. Very short.
UEFA list no confirmed absentees for the Italians. Only Federico Dimarco appears as a major doubt after a knee problem. That single question mark gives Chivu a luxury Mourinho does not have: almost a full squad and almost total continuity.
Dimarco’s condition is the one cloud. The wing-back picked up his knee injury in Serie A action against Napoli and remains uncertain for the trip to Madrid. If he fails to make it, Inter will have to reshape that left flank, a key part of their attacking patterns.
Even so, the core of the team is intact. Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Nicolò Barella, Alessandro Bastoni and Lautaro Martínez are all expected to feature. That spine gives Inter a clear selection advantage over a Madrid side scrambling for solutions.
On a Champions League night, that difference in stability can decide everything.
How They Could Line Up
UEFA’s latest predicted lineups underline the contrast.
Mourinho is tipped to go with a 3-5-2, leaning on structure and star power to cover the gaps.
Thibaut Courtois is expected in goal. In front of him, a back three of Ibrahima Konaté, Antonio Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen. Out wide, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella are projected as wing-backs, with Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham and Brahim Díaz tasked with stitching together a makeshift midfield. Up front, Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé provide the firepower.
It is a shape that asks the midfield to survive and the forwards to decide it.
Inter are also forecast to line up with three at the back.
Josep Martínez could start in goal, protected by Yann Bisseck, Manuel Akanji and Alessandro Bastoni. Across midfield, Dumfries, Çalhanoğlu, Barella, Piotr Zieliński and Dimarco are expected to start, provided the latter is passed fit. Lautaro Martínez and Francesco Pio Esposito are tipped to lead the line.
Two systems that mirror each other. Two benches reading the same tactical script. Yet the depth behind those lineups tells a very different story.
The final twist may come from the treatment room. If Tchouaméni fails his fitness test, Madrid lose one of the few players capable of anchoring that patched-up midfield. If Dimarco does not make it, Inter must rework a flank that has become one of their biggest strengths.
Official lineups will drop around an hour before kick-off. By then, we will know whether Mourinho walks into this Champions League night merely weakened – or badly exposed.
