José Mourinho Supports Real Madrid Move for Martín Zubimendi

José Mourinho has given Real Madrid the green light: go and get Martín Zubimendi.

The Arsenal midfielder, once again, sits at the centre of a familiar transfer storm. According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, the 27-year-old has forced his way back into Madrid’s plans this summer, a year after the move first seemed on the verge of happening.

Back then, as Xabi Alonso took charge at the Bernabéu, Zubimendi looked destined to swap La Liga for the Spanish capital. Instead, he ended up in north London, with Arsenal paying 65 million euros to prise him away. Now his name is back on the Madrid agenda — and this time the push is coming directly from the dugout.

Rodri’s refusal to move to Madrid has reopened the door. With that option shut down, Mourinho has, according to the report, turned firmly towards Zubimendi and urged the club to act. He wants a creative midfielder, and he has signed off on this deal.

The situation at Arsenal helps. Zubimendi has lost much of his standing in Mikel Arteta’s side, and his representatives are already exploring a way out. They are gauging interest, testing the market, and listening carefully to what Madrid might be prepared to offer.

Arsenal, for their part, are not blocking the exit. The stance is clear: they are open to a sale if the right offer arrives. But that offer has to be big. Having invested 65 million euros last summer, the Gunners expect any bid to go beyond that figure before they even consider doing business.

Madrid, though, have their own hurdles. Mourinho may be pushing, but the club’s position is that no further signings will be made unless someone leaves first. One current squad member has to go to make room — financially and in the dressing room — before Zubimendi can come in.

So the equation is set. Arsenal want more than 65 million euros. Zubimendi is open to a move. Mourinho has given his approval.

Now it comes down to whether Madrid are willing to sell to buy, and how much they truly value a midfielder they let slip away once already.
