Mudryk’s Doping Ban Rescinded: Chelsea Winger Cleared to Play
Mykhailo Mudryk’s career has been handed an unexpected lifeline. The Chelsea winger, frozen out of football since November 2024 after a positive test for meldonium, is free to play again after his four-year ban was rescinded.
The decision brings a dramatic end to a saga that threatened to wipe out the prime years of the Ukrainian’s career and cast a long shadow over Chelsea’s long-term gamble on him.
From Four-Year Exile to Immediate Return
Mudryk had not kicked a competitive ball since testing positive for a concentration of meldonium, a substance used to boost respiratory capacity and banned under anti-doping regulations. Six months after that test, the FA imposed the maximum punishment: a four-year suspension, ruling him out until December 2028.

Mudryk spoke openly about the toll the case had taken on him, and the relief that it is finally over.
“After a long battle, the four-year ban that was imposed on me has been rescinded, and I am free to resume my career with immediate effect,” he said. “I am grateful that this process has reached a conclusion, that I have been cleared to return to football and that I can now look ahead to my future.
“This has been the most difficult period of my career. As I have always maintained from the outset of this case, I have never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance. My commitment to competing fairly and representing my club and country with professionalism and integrity has always been important to me. I would like to thank my family and friends for their support and belief throughout this period.”
While the legal and regulatory machinery turned in the background, Mudryk was effectively cut adrift. Banned from Chelsea’s training ground and denied access to club facilities, he trained alone, trying to maintain elite conditioning without the rhythm, structure, or adrenaline of team football.
Now that isolation ends.
Chelsea’s Long Bet Back in Play
Chelsea have stood by Mudryk in public ever since the ban was announced, a stance underpinned by the extraordinary nine-year deal they handed him in 2022. That contract always signalled that the club saw him not as a short-term signing but as a long-term project, a winger to build around for the best part of a decade.
On Friday afternoon, the club issued a short but pointed statement, welcoming the outcome and his immediate availability. Chelsea said they were “pleased that the matter has now reached a conclusion which allows him to return to football with immediate effect.”
The message was brief, but the implication was clear: they still see a future for him at Stamford Bridge.
That future begins right away. Mudryk will join Chelsea’s preseason tour of Australia and Asia, re-entering a dressing room that has moved on in his absence and a squad that has continued to evolve.
