Mudryk's Return and New Arrivals at Chelsea's Hong Kong Tour

Chelsea’s pre-season tour has rolled into Hong Kong, and with it comes a flurry of arrivals that could reshape the mood around Xabi Alonso’s first summer in charge.

The headline name is Mykhailo Mudryk. Not for a wondergoal or a record fee this time, but for the end of a saga that has kept him out of competitive football for 20 months.

Mudryk’s long road back

The 25-year-old Ukrainian winger is finally free to play again after serving a lengthy suspension triggered by a positive test for meldonium, a substance that was on the banned list at the time. Scientific guidance has since shifted; under current regulations, that same test would not have led to a guilty verdict.

The result is a strange kind of vindication. The punishment cannot be unwound, the lost time cannot be returned, but Mudryk now walks back into a Chelsea dressing room with his name cleared and his career effectively starting again.

He is due to land in Hong Kong on Monday, just over 48 hours before Chelsea face Juventus in a high-profile friendly at Kai Tak Stadium on Wednesday evening. After nearly two years on the sidelines, even a pre-season appearance could feel like a rebirth.

Welbeck flies in, Henderson waits

Mudryk will not be the only new face stepping off the plane.

Chelsea have reached an agreement with Brighton for 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck, the fee understood to be minimal. The former England forward completed his medical in London last week and has signed a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge. He is now set to join up with his new teammates in Hong Kong, offering Alonso an experienced option at the top end of the pitch.

Jordan Henderson is also on his way to becoming a Chelsea player, with only the official announcement outstanding. The 36-year-old, though, will not be part of this leg of the tour.

Henderson is still recovering from a severe fracture to his left forearm and wrist, sustained in a heavy fall over an advertising hoarding after England’s World Cup win over Mexico. Until that heals, his integration into Alonso’s plans will have to wait.

Quenda and Penders step into the frame

The tour will also mark a first real look at some of Chelsea’s newer and younger pieces.

Geovany Quenda, signed this summer from Sporting CP, is expected in Hong Kong later in the week. He was originally due to travel to Sydney last month but picked up a minor knock in a behind-closed-doors friendly and stayed at Cobham for rehabilitation.

That setback has passed. Quenda is now fit, available, and eager to make an early impression on Alonso in what is shaping up to be a fiercely competitive squad.

Alongside him, Mike Penders will finally rejoin the group after an extended break granted for his World Cup duties with Belgium. His late arrival is a reminder of how heavily loaded Chelsea’s calendar has become, even before the new season kicks off.

Set-piece specialist on the way

The travelling party is not just about players.

Chelsea are expected to welcome Austin MacPhee to Hong Kong after striking an agreement with Aston Villa for the highly regarded set-piece coach. His arrival would underline the club’s intent to squeeze every marginal gain from a squad already rich in talent.

Whether MacPhee appears on the training pitch in front of supporters on Tuesday evening remains unclear. Chelsea will hold an open session for fans, a first close-up glimpse of Alonso’s work and the evolving shape of his team.

By then, Mudryk should be in town. Welbeck too. Quenda and Penders on the way. A new coach ready to fine-tune the details.

For a club that has lurched from rebuild to reset in recent years, Hong Kong suddenly feels less like a stopover and more like a staging ground.
