Mykhailo Mudryk’s Chelsea future has been thrown wide open just as he steps back into elite football.

The 25-year-old winger is free to play again after the FA and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) brought his disciplinary saga to an early close, cutting short a four-year ban that had threatened to derail his career at its peak. The case, rooted in a positive test for meldonium from October 2024, has now been overtaken by changes in WADA’s testing processes – changes that mean his sample, if analysed under today’s standards, would never have been flagged as a violation.

So Mudryk is back. And the market has noticed.

Interest builds as Mudryk lands in Hong Kong

Chelsea have been approached by a string of clubs keen to explore a deal, with options ranging from a straight sale to a season-long loan. Coventry City, now managed by former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, are among the sides to have made their interest known if the winger becomes available.

Lampard knows exactly what Mudryk can offer. The Ukrainian made eight appearances under him during Lampard’s second spell in the Stamford Bridge dugout, flashes of raw pace and direct running hinting at the “special player” Xabi Alonso now believes he can mould.

Two more Premier League clubs are understood to have made enquiries, while three sides from across Europe have also registered their interest. For a player who has not been part of Chelsea’s main training group since December 2024, it is a remarkable level of demand.

Mudryk has spent the past months working alone, away from the first-team environment, after that positive test for meldonium – a substance on the banned list since 2016 and known to boost endurance. Throughout, he has insisted he never knowingly took it. The case dragged on until the recent appeal process brought a resolution and an early end to his suspension.

Now the winger is back among teammates. He flew out to Hong Kong over the weekend, travelling with new signing Danny Welbeck to join Alonso’s squad on their pre-season tour. When Mudryk stepped off the plane on Monday, he was mobbed by fans, a reminder that his reputation and profile have not faded during his enforced absence.

Alonso has spoken of his excitement at finally working with the Ukraine international, labelling him “special” and clearly intrigued by the chance to integrate that explosive left-footed threat into his attacking options. Yet Chelsea are in no rush to force a decision.

All options on the table

Inside the club, the message to Mudryk is clear: take your time, get back up to speed, then talk. He has been told that every pathway remains open. Stay and fight for a place. Head out on loan. Or leave permanently if the right offer arrives for all parties.

For now, the priority is simple – reintegration. Chelsea and Alonso are content to let him settle back into the rhythm of full training, reconnect with the dressing room and rediscover the sharpness that persuaded the club to pay £62 million to bring him from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023.

Only once that process is underway will the real decision be made. With Lampard’s Coventry watching closely, Premier League rivals circling, and interest bubbling on the continent, Mudryk’s next move could define not just his season, but the trajectory of a career that suddenly has a second chance.
