The 19-year-old Arsenal prospect Myles Lewis-Skelly has surprised many by naming Tottenham Hotspur's summer signing Mateus Fernandes as the toughest Premier League adversary he has faced. In a recent interview, the young utility player praised Fernandes over more widely known stars in the league.
A Rising Star's Unique Perspective
Approaching his 20th birthday, Lewis-Skelly already holds an impressive record, including a Premier League winner's medal and a start in a Champions League final. With 81 senior appearances and six caps for England, he has matched up against some of the best players across defense and midfield roles.
Despite having faced numerous top-tier talents, Lewis-Skelly singled out Fernandes, especially recalling their encounters when Fernandes played briefly for West Ham United. This choice highlights his focus on the challenges presented by direct matchups rather than just star power.

"Mateus Fernandes, when he was at West Ham," Lewis-Skelly stated immediately when asked about his toughest opponent.
He also spoke highly of new Arsenal signing Bruno Guimaraes, describing the Brazil international as a valuable presence for learning and development.
"Bruno brings energy, experience, intensity," said Lewis-Skelly. "When I heard he was joining, I was super happy because it’s someone to learn from and pick the brain of. He’s another winner, someone who plays in a similar position to you, so you can always learn from him. Being a sponge to Bruno is going to be really impactful."
Fernandes' Rocky Time at Spurs
Though Lewis-Skelly speaks highly of Fernandes, the midfielder’s journey in English football has been challenging. After suffering consecutive relegations with Southampton and West Ham, Fernandes made a high-profile £85 million move to Tottenham in the summer of 2026.
His start under coach Roberto De Zerbi has been tough. In a recent 3-2 loss to Aston Villa, Fernandes was substituted at half-time due to a disappointing performance. De Zerbi defended the decision, emphasizing the need for Fernandes to improve.
"I have big confidence in Mateus, but I didn’t like his performance today," De Zerbi said. "He knows. It’s not an attack on Mateus, I love Mateus, but we need more from him because he can do better, even in that position."

With Bruno Guimaraes now at Arsenal, Lewis-Skelly faces stiff competition for playing time. Though he shone at left-back during his breakthrough season, he identifies as a midfielder and aims to learn from experienced teammates to secure a regular role in the center of the pitch.
