Napoli Targets Barcelona Midfielder Gavi Amid Reduced Role Under Flick
Napoli have emerged as unexpected contenders for Barcelona's midfielder Gavi, who has seen his role diminish under coach Hansi Flick. The Italian club is reportedly preparing a substantial offer to acquire the Spanish international during the upcoming winter transfer window.
Napoli Enters the Race for Gavi
The European football scene might witness a notable change with Napoli stepping forward to pursue the signature of Gavi, a graduate of Barcelona's La Masia academy. Reports from Calciomercato reveal that Napoli has already opened discussions with Barcelona about a potential transfer.
The Serie A club seeks to strengthen its midfield options after several injuries have thinned Massimiliano Allegri's squad. They are eager to add Gavi's dynamic style and technical skills as they aim for success in domestic competitions.
Last summer, Manchester United attempted to sign him, but those efforts were rejected by the player, who wanted to stay at Barcelona following a strong end to the previous season. After recovering from a knee injury, he started eight of the last nine La Liga matches and secured a place in Spain's World Cup squad.
Barcelona Sets a Price Tag
Despite being a fan favorite and a product of their famed academy, Barcelona appears more open to selling if the right offer comes through. The club is said to consider letting him go if an offer near €40 million arrives.
In light of this, Napoli has explored the chance to bring Gavi in this winter. Sporting director Giovanni Manna has contacted the player's representatives to discuss his interest. Napoli favors an initial loan deal with an option to buy, aiming to secure him without a large upfront cost.
Playing Time Challenges at Barcelona
The main reason for Napoli's interest lies in Gavi's limited minutes under Flick this season. At 22 years old, the midfielder has logged just 211 minutes over eight appearances for Barcelona, starting only twice.
This reduced role places him behind players like Pedri, Rodri, Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, and even Marc Bernal in the pecking order.
Impressive Career Stats Despite Current Form
Even with recent challenges, Gavi's record at Barcelona remains strong. He has appeared in 174 matches across all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing 18 assists. His contributions helped the club win three La Liga titles, two Spanish Super Cups, and one Copa del Rey.
