Newcastle United's Preseason Challenges Ahead of Liverpool Clash
Newcastle United’s countdown to Liverpool is on, and the clock is not being kind to Matthias Jaissle.
Less than two weeks out from the Premier League opener, the new head coach is still juggling a disrupted preseason, a bruised squad and a full-back situation that refuses to settle.
Hall back in the frame, but questions remain
The good news comes on the left.
Lewis Hall, who left Newcastle’s training camp in Spain in early August as a precaution, has already reappeared in black and white. He featured in Wednesday’s friendly against Everton at Murrayfield, easing fears that his withdrawal from the camp signalled something more serious.
Reports from the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope and Simon Jones indicate that Hall should be available to face Liverpool on August 23 — assuming he is still a Newcastle player by then amid ongoing transfer noise around the squad. The club had always targeted this stage of preseason for his return, and The Athletic’s Chris Waugh had flagged before the Everton game that Hall was due back in training on Tyneside and could feature in the final warm-up matches.
The plan has largely held. Hall has resumed work at The Knox, Newcastle’s training centre, and has now banked valuable minutes. The real question is not whether he will be fit, but whether he can get enough sharpness into his legs before Liverpool arrive.
Miley boost in midfield
There is another positive for Jaissle in the middle of the pitch.
Lewis Miley, sidelined with a broken leg, is expected to be ready for the season opener. Hope and Jones report that Newcastle anticipate the young midfielder will be fit to face Liverpool after completing his recovery, offering a timely injection of energy and depth in an area that will be crucial against Jürgen Klopp’s side.
For a squad that has had its rhythm interrupted by injuries and transfer speculation, Miley’s return is a significant lift.
Livramento blow on the right
The right side of defence is a different story.
Tino Livramento will not make it in time for Liverpool. The 23-year-old has been out since the calf injury that forced him to withdraw from England’s World Cup squad, and his rehabilitation remains ongoing — and distant.
Hope and Jones report that Livramento is currently in the United States continuing his recovery from the calf problem that kept him out of the tournament. Newcastle do not expect him to be ready for the opener, with a more realistic target emerging: the second weekend of the campaign, away at Tottenham.
If that timetable holds, Livramento will miss Liverpool but could return for the trip to Spurs on Matchday 2. That still leaves Jaissle short on natural options at right-back for one of the most demanding fixtures of the season.
Transfer urgency grows
Newcastle were already in the market for full-backs before these latest updates. Now, the need feels sharper.
With Livramento ruled out for the opener and Hall only just returning to full training and match action, the margins are thin. One setback, one tweak in training, and Jaissle’s plans could unravel on the flanks.
For now, the picture is clear enough. Newcastle are set to go into the Liverpool clash without Livramento, leaning heavily on Hall’s fitness and whatever work they can cram into the final days of preseason.
The window is still open. The question is whether Newcastle move quickly enough in the market to ensure this early-season vulnerability at full-back does not define the opening weeks of Jaissle’s reign.
