Northampton Town Signs Leicester Striker Nathan Opoku on Three-Year Deal

Northampton Town have moved to sharpen their attack with the signing of Leicester City forward Nathan Opoku on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old Ghanaian arrives at Sixfields after a winding route through college football in the United States, European loans and a breakthrough year in League Two. Leicester picked him up from Syracuse University in 2023, impressed enough by his college form to bring him straight into their system.

He never actually got a run in the Foxes’ first team. Instead, Opoku was sent immediately to OH Leuven, Leicester’s Belgian sister club, where he found the net five times and adjusted to senior European football.

Last season he dropped into League Two with Newport County and quietly became their main threat. Six goals in 30 league appearances made him the Exiles’ top scorer, a return that caught the eye of Northampton’s recruitment team.

“He has had a different journey to most players but that has helped him gain a good breadth of knowledge and experience and he is an excellent age,” Hogg told the club’s website.

“He has spent the last three years at Leicester City and enjoyed loan spells both in Europe and last season in League Two so he knows the level and he has scored goals at this level.

“We have tracked Nathan for a while so we know all about him, we have done our homework and we know he is hardworking, has an excellent attitude and is a good person, he is a good character and a good player.”

From Syracuse to Sixfields via Leuven and Newport, Opoku’s path has been anything but standard. Northampton now believe that unusual route has produced a forward ready to make his mark in their colours.
