Norway Lodges Formal Protest Over Donald Trump’s Role in Folarin Balogun Red Card Incident

The controversy around Folarin Balogun's red card has stirred tension across the 2026 World Cup participants. Despite Balogun's return, the U.S. was ousted 4-1 by Belgium, but Norway now steps up to challenge the reversal of his ban. The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) President Lise Klaveness announced plans to file a formal complaint over the decision influenced by outside intervention.

Speaking to The Times, Klaveness expressed concerns about bending the rules under external pressure, warning it threatens football’s integrity. She emphasized that the verdict overturning Balogun’s one-match suspension was swayed improperly and lacked due process. "When you start changing rules because of state leaders’ interference, it shifts where the line is drawn," Klaveness stated. She also highlighted that FIFA President Gianni Infantino had awarded Trump the FIFA Peace Prize just before the tournament began, adding complexity to the situation.

Trump’s Involvement Clarified

Donald Trump openly admitted contacting Infantino to request a review of Balogun’s suspension, calling the red card "a horrible decision." He insisted he didn’t dictate the outcome but described himself as the catalyst for reconsideration. Infantino confirmed speaking with Trump but denied any influence on the final ruling, pointing out that FIFA’s independent judicial bodies handled the matter.

What Sparked the Controversy?

During the Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Balogun was shown a red card after an incident involving a cleat studs contact on Tarik Muharemovic. This resulted in a mandatory one-match ban, sidelining him for the critical Round of 16 clash with Belgium. Following Trump's call, FIFA disciplinary committee chair Mohammad Al Kamali alone decided to lift the suspension, allowing Balogun to play. Despite this, the U.S. lost heavily and exited the tournament.
