Ollie Watkins is fast becoming the striker around whom this summer’s transfer market threatens to spin.
Arsenal want him. Manchester United are circling. Clubs across England and Europe are checking their budgets and their forward lines, weighing up whether they can prise Aston Villa’s talisman away. They never got close.
Villa shut it down before it could even gather pace, making it clear that Watkins is not a name they are prepared to entertain at that price. The message from Birmingham was blunt: their England international is not a bargain to be picked off.
For Fenerbahce, it was a reality check. For the rest of Europe, it was a warning.
Arsenal’s striker question
The interest from north London is different. Arsenal are not testing the water; they are planning.
Uncertainty around Gabriel Jesus’s future has grown, and Mikel Arteta wants sharper, more reliable firepower at the top of the pitch. Watkins, with his blend of movement, work rate and Premier League know-how, sits right at the top of the Gunners’ shortlist.
This is not a speculative link. Arsenal’s need is clear. If Jesus moves on, they cannot afford to start the season light up front. Watkins offers a ready-made solution: proven in the league, adaptable in a possession-heavy side, and capable of leading the line on his own or dovetailing with others.
For a club pushing to turn title challenges into titles, that profile is gold dust.
United’s Plan B – or Plan A?
Old Trafford is watching the same player, but through a slightly different lens.
Manchester United’s immediate focus is Joshua Zirkzee, yet the Dutchman’s situation could drag the club into a straight fight for Watkins. Zirkzee has strong suitors in Serie A, with Juventus and Roma both in the frame. If he chooses Italy, United will need an alternative – quickly.
That is where Watkins comes into sharp view.
United are monitoring the situation, ready to move if Zirkzee heads for Turin or Rome. In that scenario, an official bid for the Villa striker is expected to follow. Watkins would not arrive as a project. He would arrive as a starter, a focal point for a team trying to rebuild its attacking identity.
The stakes are obvious: miss on Zirkzee, and United cannot afford to miss again.

For all the posturing, this saga may come down to something brutally simple: money.
Villa have already shown they will not entertain £30m. Behind the scenes, there is a sense that offers around £40m could at least bring them to the table. That figure is hardly small, yet for Premier League clubs with Champions League ambitions and broadcasting riches, it is not out of reach.
This is where the financial muscle of England’s elite could finally crack Villa’s resistance. Arsenal have a pressing tactical need. United have a structural one. Both have the resources to turn admiration into a serious bid.
Villa, of course, still hold the cards. Watkins is central to what they do, and they have already proved they will not be bounced into a sale. But every player has a price, every club has a threshold, and every summer has its defining transfer.
The question now is simple: who is willing to pay it, and how much is a guaranteed Premier League goalscorer really worth in this market?
