Ørjan Nyland Returns to RB Leipzig with World Cup Experience
The first time Ørjan Nyland walked through the doors at RB Leipzig, he was a promising keeper still learning the rhythms of top-level football. This time, he comes back with a World Cup quarter-final on his CV, 76 caps for Norway, and the look of a man who knows exactly what he wants.
When the call came from Saxony, there was no hesitation.
"When the opportunity arose to return to RB Leipzig, I didn't have to think twice," Nyland said, as quoted by the official Bundesliga website. "I have many positive memories of the club and the people here, and I'm really looking forward to seeing them again."

Nyland returns a different player to the one who first wore Leipzig colours. Spain hardened him. The World Cup with Norway elevated him.
"Since then, I've gained a lot of valuable experience in Spain," he said. "The World Cup with Norway was a very special highlight, which showed me once again how much I enjoy big matches and daily competition. I want to bring that energy with me to Leipzig now."
Those performances on the biggest stage – guiding Norway to the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals – have changed his profile. He is no longer simply a solid Bundesliga stopper with Ingolstadt on his résumé. He is a goalkeeper who has stood under the brightest lights and held his nerve.
Leipzig intend to tap straight into that.
Schafer’s bet on character and calm
Sporting director Marcel Schäfer made it clear: this is about more than reflex saves.
"With Ørjan, we're gaining a very experienced goalkeeper whom we already know very well as a player and as a person," Schäfer said. The familiarity matters. Leipzig are not guessing here. They know the dressing-room presence they are getting. "Even during his initial time with us, he demonstrated that he's an absolute team player, a reliable professional, and always ready to take on responsibility."
Responsibility is the keyword. Leipzig are handing the No 1 shirt to Maarten Vandevoordt, a highly rated, modern goalkeeper expected to grow into one of Europe’s best. But no club with Leipzig’s ambitions can afford to leave that role unchallenged.
