Orlando Pirates Mourns the Loss of Nani Chakane

Orlando Pirates mourns the passing of Maleshoane Elizabeth “Nani” Chakane, the beloved wife of long-serving club figure Mr. Franklin Chakane, who died on 23 June 2026.

In a period that cuts far deeper than results and league tables, the club has placed its full support behind the Chakane family, asking the wider football community to hold them in their thoughts and prayers during a time of profound loss. Colleagues, former players, and supporters know Franklin not only as a football man, but as a pillar of the Orlando Pirates family. Today, that family grieves with him.

The club has extended its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Chakane, the Chakane family, their relatives, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Nani’s presence. Her passing leaves a silence that stretches well beyond the four stands of a stadium.

Funeral Arrangements

Funeral arrangements have been confirmed. The service will take place on Thursday, 2 July 2026, at 09:00, at the Uniting Reformed Church of South Africa in Orlando East, Soweto. After the service, the funeral procession is scheduled to depart at approximately 11:00 for the burial at Nasrec Cemetery.

Mourners are being received at the family home at 1173 Jacobs Street, Protea North, Soweto, where the doors remain open to those wishing to pay their respects.

At a club where history and identity matter as much as any trophy, this is a moment of collective mourning. Orlando Pirates has called on its supporters and the wider football fraternity to stand with the Chakane family, united in sympathy and prayer as they navigate the difficult days ahead.
