Penybont 1-0 Colwyn Bay: Pritchard's Late Heroics Keep Unbeaten Run Alive

Penybont’s unbeaten start to the Cymru Premier season survived a bruising afternoon and a barrage of late pressure, as Rhys Griffiths’ side ground out a 1-0 win over Colwyn Bay to climb to sixth.

They paid a price for it.

Inside the first 20 minutes, two of their headline summer signings were already off the pitch. Jonathan Leko went first, Ryan Hill followed, and the home crowd suddenly found themselves watching a very different game to the one they had imagined at kick-off.

The disruption could easily have rattled Penybont. Instead, one of the replacements decided it would be his day.

Owain Pritchard, sent on earlier than anyone planned, delivered the decisive moment. When Colwyn Bay goalkeeper Mark Halstead spilled a routine situation into chaos, Pritchard reacted quickest, snapping up the loose ball and finishing from close range to give the hosts the lead.

The goal jolted Penybont into life.

Chris Venables, the veteran who has seen just about everything in this league, almost killed the contest soon after. His effort crashed against the crossbar, the sound echoing around the ground as Colwyn Bay clung on.

That miss kept Bay alive, and they grew into the second half. The visitors pushed higher, moved the ball quicker, and started to ask real questions of the Penybont back line.

When those questions reached the penalty area, Daniel Higgs had the answers.

The young Penybont goalkeeper produced key saves to deny Callum Bratley and Ethan Roberts as the pressure mounted. Each stop felt bigger than the last, each one dragging the clock a little closer to full-time.

Colwyn Bay kept coming. Penybont kept blocking, clearing, scrambling.

The whistle finally went, and the single goal from Pritchard stood tall amid the injuries, the woodwork, and the late siege.

Unbeaten, up to sixth, and already showing they can suffer as well as play – Penybont’s season is starting to take shape.
