Pep Chavarria: The Unconventional Journey of Chelsea's New Left-Back
Pep Chavarria has signed a five-year contract with Chelsea, marking a remarkable rise from Spain’s lower leagues where he played until age 24. Last season, he made 45 appearances for Rayo Vallecano, contributing one goal and three assists.
Unlike many players who break into top clubs early, Chavarria’s path was slower but steady. He only debuted in La Liga at 24, an age when many professionals have already settled at high levels. After four years with Rayo Vallecano, the left-back completed his biggest career move with a deal worth around £16.3m plus £1.7m in add-ons.
“I’m so excited to get started,” said the 28-year-old. “This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success.”
From Catalonia's Lower Leagues to Stamford Bridge
Born in Figueres, Catalonia, Chavarria began at his hometown club before moving to Olot, where he made his mark in Spain’s lower divisions. A 2020 transfer to Real Zaragoza gave him his first taste of professional football at a larger club, spending two seasons in Spain’s second tier.
His step up to La Liga came in 2022 with Rayo Vallecano. Despite not being favorites against Spain’s giants, Rayo became tough competitors thanks to strong teamwork and smart recruitment. Chavarria arrived for under £2m and thrived.
At Vallecas, he grew into a reliable full-back, blending defensive toughness with physicality essential for the role. Across 125 games, he became a fixture on Rayo’s left side.
This period also allowed Chavarria to face some of the game’s best, including Xabi Alonso, then Real Madrid’s manager. In a November goalless draw against Madrid, Chavarria’s disciplined and aggressive defending impressed Alonso, who later targeted him after becoming Chelsea’s manager.
Chavarria also started in the Conference League final last season, where Rayo lost narrowly 1-0 to Crystal Palace.
Fitting Into Chelsea's Plans
Joining alongside new right-back Marco Palestra, who cost £47m from Atalanta, Chavarria gives Alonso options to recreate the wing-back system that brought Bundesliga success with Bayer Leverkusen in 2024.
The signing adds depth following the departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for £51.8m in June.
A Complex Transfer
Securing Chavarria’s transfer was challenging. Initially, Rayo Vallecano demanded his £42.4m release clause be met in full, halting early negotiations. Sources told BBC Sport talks were difficult because Rayo considered that price fair, noting Chavarria’s stats rival those of Cucurella.

With four years remaining on his contract, Rayo's successful player sales model keeps the club financially secure and able to resist offers like Spain’s top three clubs. Moreover, any profit above the player's book value would trigger a 25% tax charge, reducing net proceeds from a sale.
