Plymouth Claims First Away Win in League One with 3-2 Victory
Plymouth claimed their first away win of the Sky Bet League One season with a 3-2 victory at winless Doncaster – a scoreline that flattered the hosts after Tom Cleverley’s side took control and never really let it go.
Evans sparks Plymouth surge
Doncaster began with the urgency of a side desperate to end a barren run, but it was Plymouth who settled quicker and started to stitch the game together. Passes stuck, runners found space, and the visitors grew into the contest with a quiet authority.
The breakthrough came on 28 minutes. Oliver Irow drove in a low strike that Tommy Simkin could only parry, and Will Evans reacted first, turning the loose ball home to give Argyle the lead their composure deserved.
Doncaster tried to answer before the interval. Alfie May, always their sharpest threat, improvised with a bicycle kick that clipped a defender and looped over the bar. It drew a roar from the home crowd, but not a goal. Plymouth went in at the break looking the more assured side.
May’s leveller, Argyle’s response
The second half opened with Doncaster’s best spell. The pressure finally told six minutes after the restart. Owen Bailey was bundled over in the box by Matty Sorinola, and this time May did not miss his chance. From the penalty spot on 51 minutes, he drilled Doncaster level and briefly shifted the mood inside the ground.
Any sense of a home revival, though, was short-lived. Plymouth did not panic. They tightened up, kept the ball, and waited for their moment.
It arrived on 74 minutes. A clever pass released Bim Pepple into space, and the forward showed real composure, striding through before finishing calmly to restore Argyle’s lead. One precise move, one ruthless finish, and Doncaster were chasing again.
The game slipped away nine minutes later. On 83 minutes, substitute Caleb Watts pounced on a defensive mix-up, racing onto the loose ball and firing into an empty net. It was a gift, and Plymouth accepted it with thanks, the third goal effectively sealing the points.
Late twist, but no rescue
Doncaster’s response came too late to matter. They struggled to build sustained pressure, and Plymouth managed the closing stages with the control of a side sensing a landmark away win.
Deep into stoppage time, Sean Grehan finally gave the home fans something to cheer. He met a Bayley McCann free-kick with a thumping header, a powerful consolation in the final minute of added time that cut the deficit to 3-2 but did not change the outcome.
By then, the damage was long done. Plymouth had their first away victory of the campaign, Cleverley had a statement result, and Doncaster’s search for a first league win of the season goes on.
