Police Investigate Incident Involving Cardiff Defender Krystian Bielik

Police have launched an investigation after a flashpoint between Cardiff City defender Krystian Bielik and home supporters marred Portsmouth’s 2-0 Championship win at Fratton Park on Saturday.

The incident unfolded late in the second half as Bielik went to retrieve the ball from the crowd. What should have been a routine moment on the touchline turned ugly. Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy said afterwards that his player “got slapped in the face”, while footage shared on social media appeared to show the Poland international grabbing a young fan around the upper body.

Hampshire Police confirmed on Sunday that they are looking into an allegation of assault.

“We can confirm that we are investigating an incident in which a teenage boy was reportedly the victim of a common assault during the football match at Fratton Park. Our enquiries are ongoing,” a police statement read.

From the stands, several Portsmouth supporters gestured towards the pitch, indicating they believed the youngster had been grabbed by the throat. Tension crackled around that corner of the ground. As tempers frayed, another fan then hurled a ball at the head of Cardiff defender Perry Ng. Both supporters involved were removed from the stadium.

Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho apologised to Cardiff’s players after the final whistle, with the home side’s win overshadowed by the confrontation.

Pompey later issued a formal statement, saying: “Portsmouth Football Club are aware of supporter concerns regarding the incident involving a young fan and an opposition player at yesterday's match at Fratton Park.

“As this remains a safeguarding matter and is currently under investigation by both the club and the police, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further on the circumstances at this time.

“However, we are aware that a number of claims and assertions are circulating on social media. We would urge caution against speculation while enquiries are ongoing.

“The welfare and safeguarding of young people are of paramount importance to Portsmouth Football Club. We will continue to liaise with the relevant parties as enquiries progress.

“No further comment will be made at this stage while investigations remain ongoing.”

The Football Association has been made aware of the incident and will study the referee’s report before deciding whether to pursue disciplinary action.

Cardiff City, for their part, backed the handling of the situation on the day.

“We are satisfied with the way that match officials dealt with the situation during the game, having been in full view of it. Player protection will always be of paramount importance to us,” the club said.

The football moves on. The investigation does not.
