Portsmouth Boss Apologizes to Cardiff Players After Fratton Park Incident

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho issued a clear apology to Cardiff City’s players after an ugly flashpoint involving home fans marred his side’s 2-0 Championship win at Fratton Park.

The incident unfolded in the 72nd minute as Cardiff defender Krystian Bielik went to collect the ball near the touchline. What should have been a routine restart suddenly turned sour.

Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy said afterwards that Bielik had been “slapped in the face” by a supporter. Footage shared on social media appeared to show the Poland international reacting by grabbing a young fan around the upper body, prompting angry responses from nearby Portsmouth supporters.

Several home fans gestured towards the pitch, indicating they believed the youngster had been grabbed by the throat. Tension spiked in the away end and on the pitch, with players and officials trying to calm the situation as stewards moved in.

As tempers simmered, another flashpoint followed. A different Portsmouth fan threw a ball at the head of Cardiff defender Perry Ng. That proved the final straw: both fans involved were ejected from Fratton Park.

Speaking after the game, Mousinho did not try to gloss over what had happened.

“The referee said that, as Krystian went to get the ball, there was a little bit of a kerfuffle and one of the supporters struck him,” he explained. “It wasn't a good incident. I have just seen him there, and he was OK, but that's not the point, we can't be having that.”

Fratton Park is renowned as one of the most intimidating grounds in the division, a tight, noisy stadium that can smother visiting sides when the home crowd is in full voice. Mousinho wants that edge. He does not want this.

“We want to create a really difficult atmosphere at Fratton Park, we have done that successfully over the past few years,” he said. “Sometimes it tips over, I understand that, I don't think it needs to tip over to that extent.

“We extend our apologies to the players, Cardiff and make sure we can try to cut it out.”

Portsmouth left with three points and another statement win. They also left with a stark reminder that the line between hostile and unacceptable cannot be crossed – not by players, and certainly not by those in the stands.
