Portsmouth Sign Chelsea Starlet Ryan Kavuma-McQueen on Loan

Portsmouth have moved to sharpen their wide options with the season-long loan signing of highly rated Chelsea winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen.

The 17-year-old, a standout in Chelsea’s academy system, arrives at Fratton Park having already tasted senior football for the Premier League club. He made his first-team debut in emphatic fashion, coming off the bench in a 7-0 FA Cup win over Port Vale.

Chelsea tied the teenager down to professional terms in January, a clear marker of how strongly they view his potential. That faith only grew as last season unfolded. Kavuma-McQueen was named on the bench for Champions League fixtures against Paris St-Germain and Ajax, and also made the match-day squad for Premier League clashes with Liverpool and Tottenham as Chelsea pushed him closer to the top level.

Inside Cobham, he has climbed steadily through the age groups, featuring regularly for both the Under-18s and U21s. Comfortable on either flank, he offers pace, direct running and the ability to go either way, qualities Portsmouth boss John Mousinho has been hunting for all summer.

“We’ve been in the market for wingers for quite a while and Ryan ticks all the boxes of the profile of player that we want to bring in,” Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent. “He’s quick, direct, can play off both sides and he’s only 17 so that probably tells you how highly we rate him and how highly Chelsea rate him.”

Kavuma-McQueen also joined Chelsea’s first-team group in pre-season, travelling with the squad and getting minutes on their tour, another sign of his rapid rise inside a stacked dressing room.

“We’ve tracked him throughout his youth career and he made the step up last year into the 21s side so we’re really excited to get him through the door,” Mousinho added. “I think he’s going to fit the way that we want to play really well and we’re really pleased to get this one done.”

At Portsmouth, the winger will drop straight into a competitive stable of wide players. He will fight for minutes and combine with new signing Abu Kamara, as well as Josh Murphy, Harvey Blair, Eoin Kenny and Luke Brooke-Smith, in the areas out wide that Mousinho views as key to Pompey’s attacking identity.

For Kavuma-McQueen, it is a first serious step into senior league football. For Portsmouth, it is a calculated gamble on Premier League talent at the very start of his journey.
