PSG's Pursuit of Yan Diomande Hits Stalemate Amid Liverpool Interest
Paris Saint-Germain are staring at a decisive few days in their pursuit of Yan Diomande, with the deal threatening to unravel just as Liverpool quietly move back into view.
The French champions thought they had won this race weeks ago. Diomande, the explosive RB Leipzig winger, had made it known he would prioritise a move to Paris if he left the Bundesliga this summer. For Liverpool, who had tracked him since December and held near-daily talks with his camp over a switch to Anfield, that felt like a brutal twist.
They need a new star wide player. Mohamed Salah has gone after nine years and a mountain of goals, leaving a void that cannot be filled by committee. Liverpool had identified Diomande as the heir to that right flank, a marquee signing for a new era. Then came the indication that the teenager wanted PSG, and the momentum swung sharply towards Ligue 1.
Club-to-club talks followed. The expectation was clear: this would get done.
It has not.
A record fee and a hard line
Four weeks on, negotiations between PSG and Leipzig are stuck on one issue: money.
Leipzig, consistent throughout, want a record fee. Their stance has been simple: they would actually prefer to keep Diomande for at least one more season, but if they are to lose a 19-year-old of his talent now, it has to be on their terms. According to reports in Germany, that “minimum price” is €120m (£102.5m, $136.5m).
For Leipzig, that is the compromise figure.
For PSG, it is the problem.
Luis Enrique admires Diomande. He sees the talent, the speed, the one-on-one threat that could add another layer to an already loaded attack. Yet he has reportedly told transfer advisor Luis Campos that he does not consider the teenager worth such an outlay, especially when he cannot guarantee him regular minutes in a squad already packed with attacking options.
Enrique would take him. Just not at €120m.
Leipzig, for their part, are unmoved. They are described as adamant that Diomande will not be sold for a cent less, fully aware that keeping a player who wants out can create tension but equally prepared to absorb that risk if their valuation is not met.
So the deal hangs in the balance, and in Germany it is already being described as threatening to become a “fiasco” for PSG.
Frustration grows around Diomande
While the clubs circle each other, Diomande’s camp are losing patience.
They had expected more progress by now. With PSG seemingly his preferred destination and the French club in active talks, the assumption was that the transfer would be wrapped up early in the window. Instead, the winger is now due back at Leipzig’s training complex next week after a short break following his World Cup duties with Ivory Coast.
That return risks changing the mood. A player who had mentally prepared for a blockbuster move could find himself back in pre-season drills, still in limbo.
His entourage, represented by powerful agency Roc Nation, are reportedly ready to ramp up the pressure on both clubs to reach a resolution. The longer the stalemate drags on, the more it invites unwanted comparisons.
In Leipzig, the Xavi Simons saga is still fresh. Simons tried to leave in 2024, only to find potential buyers put off by Leipzig’s asking price. A move to Tottenham Hotspur eventually went through a year later, for a lower fee. That story is now being held up as a warning: hold too firm, and the market may move on.
Leipzig know that. They are still holding their line.
Liverpool wait for the door to reopen
The tension between Leipzig and PSG has not gone unnoticed on Merseyside.
Liverpool had an initial offer rejected for Diomande, but there is no doubt about their willingness to pay big for the right player. Reports suggest they would have no hesitation in meeting the £102.5m price if the opportunity to revive the transfer presented itself.
Right now, that opportunity is not there. Diomande remains set on PSG, and both clubs are still, officially at least, working towards an agreement. TEAMtalk sources have indicated that a move to Paris is still “on the cards”, with both sides hopeful of finding common ground and the player himself still intent on joining the French giants.
Yet the longer PSG hesitate, the more oxygen there is for Liverpool.
They are not standing still. With Salah gone, the club have been exploring other winger options, one of them ironically sitting in Paris already: Bradley Barcola. The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with Anfield, with suggestions he could force PSG’s hand and open the door to what has been described as an “absolutely outrageous” move to Liverpool.
Arsenal and Manchester City have also been mentioned as potential suitors for Diomande, ready to hijack the deal if it collapses. For now, that remains background noise. The main act is still PSG versus Leipzig, with Diomande caught in the middle and Liverpool watching from the wings.
The next move belongs to Paris. Do they stretch to Leipzig’s price for a teenager they cannot yet build around, or blink first and risk handing a prime Salah successor back to a rival desperate for a new star?
