Radek Vitek Joins Middlesbrough for Record Fee
Radek Vitek’s Old Trafford story is over. The next chapter starts on Teesside.
Manchester United have confirmed the Czech goalkeeper has joined Middlesbrough on a permanent deal worth up to £14 million, a fee that makes him the most expensive goalkeeper in Championship history. The previous benchmark signings of Mads Hermansen at Leicester City (around £6.5m) and Daniel Peretz at Southampton (£6.05m) now sit a long way back in the rear-view mirror.
United have not simply waved him off. The deal is laced with protection: a buy-back clause, matching rights, and a 35 per cent sell-on clause. If Vitek explodes at the Riverside and earns a big move, Old Trafford will feel the benefit in hard cash.
This move has been brewing all summer. Vitek was clear from the outset he wanted more than a squad number and a few cup ties. With Senne Lammens locked in as United’s first-choice goalkeeper and Karl Dalow arriving to act as his deputy, the 21-year-old saw his path narrowing, not opening.
He did not hide it. After United’s opening pre-season game against Wrexham, he walked through the mixed zone, stopped, and laid out his ambition in a few blunt lines.
“I feel great and ready to go again somewhere to be, hopefully, number one, so we will see. We will see what is going to happen,” he said.
The message was simple: he was done waiting.
United understood the stance. They were not prepared to demote Lammens or rip up the depth chart for a young goalkeeper still learning the trade, but they were just as unwilling to lose control of a talent they have nurtured since 2020. The compromise is this intricate deal with Middlesbrough, a club that came close to promotion last season and offers exactly what Vitek craves: a realistic shot at being the first name on the team sheet.
It has been a steady climb to this point. Vitek arrived at United from Sigma Olomouc four years ago and quickly impressed in the academy. He started every game in the 2021/22 FA Youth Cup-winning run, a campaign that marked him out as one of the most promising stoppers in the system, before stepping up to the Under-21s.
At 6ft 6in, he looks every inch the modern goalkeeper, but the last 18 months have been about more than size and potential. They have been about hard miles. He went to Accrington Stanley on a six-month loan in January 2024, then headed to Austria for a season-long spell with Blau-Weiß Linz in 2024/25, another important stretch away from Old Trafford’s safety net.
The key line on his CV, though, comes from last season. A loan at Bristol City gave him the Championship minutes that change how clubs view a young goalkeeper. He handled the division, drew attention, and turned himself from a prospect into a proven option at this level.
That experience has helped drive this record-breaking fee. Middlesbrough are not paying for a theory; they are paying for a keeper who has already felt the weight of the Championship and wants more of it.
For United, the goalkeeping hierarchy is set. For Vitek, the equation is even clearer. No more loans. No more waiting behind others. At Middlesbrough, he finally gets what he has been asking for since the summer began: the chance to be a number one, with the pressure and the promise that role always brings.
