Rafael Leao: Manchester United's Next Target in Premier League
Rafael Leao has pushed himself closer to the Premier League shop window – and straight into Manchester United’s sights.
The AC Milan forward, long trailed as one of Serie A’s most explosive talents, has openly name-checked United as a club he follows and admires, sharpening the focus on a transfer race that now feels stripped back to a handful of serious contenders.
Leao’s admiration for United laid bare
Speaking in a recent interview, the 26-year-old was asked which English sides catch his eye. His answer will have gone down very well at Old Trafford.
“Of course, I watch the Premier League a lot,” he said. “I like Manchester United, especially for Cristiano Ronaldo, who is my idol. But Arsenal is also a team I follow on TV.”
For a player who has spent years being linked with England’s elite, that is as close as it gets to circling a preferred destination in red ink. If Leao has any sway over his next move, United and Arsenal stand in the strongest positions from the Premier League.
The reality, though, is more ruthless. His future will be decided by who actually turns admiration into a concrete offer.
From €100m man to cut-price prize
Since arriving at Milan from Lille in August 2019, Leao has grown into one of the league’s marquee attractions. Eighty goals and 65 assists in 291 appearances underline his impact; the raw numbers back up the eye test.
He has been called a “global superstar” by British GQ and “world-class” by both Max Allegri and CBS Sports. At his peak, Milan responded to interest with a blunt message: pay over €100million or don’t bother calling.
That stance has softened. A disappointing campaign, coupled with Leao’s refusal to sign a new contract, has shifted the dynamic. Milan are now prepared to cash in at around €50m – roughly half of what they once demanded. For clubs with serious ambitions, that changes everything.
United, whose recruitment is now being reshaped under INEOS, were offered Leao’s services by intermediaries at the start of May, with his camp clearly working to engineer a move this summer.
United, Fenerbahce… and the Premier League pull
In Italy, Gazzetta dello Sport reported on May 23 that United and Fenerbahce are the two clubs currently showing the strongest interest. On paper, that is no contest.
Fenerbahce are a giant in Turkish football, but the Super Lig cannot match the reach, money or magnetism of the Premier League. For Leao, a player who grew up idolising Cristiano Ronaldo and has spoken openly about his affection for United, Old Trafford represents the chance to follow a very specific path.
A move to United would not just be a step up in profile; it would be the realisation of a long-held ambition to test himself in England at the highest level. Given those factors, if the choice narrows to United or Fenerbahce, the direction of travel is obvious.
European heavyweights circling elsewhere
Leao’s name has not only been whispered in Manchester. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have also been offered the chance to sign him, just as United have. For now, though, both clubs are concentrating on other targets.
That leaves the door ajar. With the fee reduced and Milan ready to negotiate, United have a cleaner run at a player who, only a year or two ago, looked financially out of reach.
On April 30, there were suggestions that INEOS could even try to sweeten the deal by offering up to three players in part exchange, an aggressive strategy designed to drag the price down even further and reshape a bloated squad in one move.
United’s wider winger puzzle
Leao is not the only name on United’s left-wing shortlist. The club are tracking Morgan Rogers, Yan Diomande and Iliman Ndiaye as they search for fresh options on that flank.
The pursuit of Leao also intersects with the unresolved situation around Marcus Rashford. United’s stance on his return and the “complications” around a permanent move to Barcelona will heavily influence how far they push for a new headline left-sided attacker.
There is another Serie A thread running through all this. United are closing in on a £38m deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, and the expectation is that once that move is tied up, Leao will become the next major Italian-based target.
One Brazilian midfielder almost in the door. One Portuguese winger potentially next in line. For United, the question is no longer whether Rafael Leao is available – it is how bold they are prepared to be to bring Ronaldo’s heir apparent to Old Trafford.
