Rangers Sign South African Defender Olwethu Makhanya on Long-Term Deal
Rangers have dipped back into the transfer market to make South Africa defender Olwethu Makhanya their eighth signing of the summer, prising the centre-back from Philadelphia Union for an undisclosed fee.
The 22-year-old has agreed a four-year contract at Ibrox, with the Glasgow club holding an option for a further year, underlining the scale of their belief in his potential rather than treating him as a short-term fix.
Makhanya arrives on the back of a rapid rise in the United States. After breaking into Philadelphia’s first team last year, he clocked up 53 appearances in Major League Soccer, enough to catch the eye not only of European scouts but also the national selectors at home.
For the defender, this is the move he has been chasing since childhood.
"I can't even explain how I am feeling right now, it is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history. I can't wait to get started," he said, laying bare what the switch to Ibrox means to him.
"For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true."
That dream was forged a long way from Glasgow. Makhanya came through at Stellenbosch in South Africa, where his performances as a composed, athletic central defender first pushed him into the spotlight. His club form was rewarded this year with a place in South Africa’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, a significant marker for a player still in the early stages of his career, even if he did not feature at the finals this summer.

Rangers manager Derek McInnes sees a profile that fits the demands of Scottish football and the expectations of Ibrox.
"He's got a lot of athleticism and good potential," McInnes said ahead of Friday’s Scottish Premiership opener away to Dundee United.
The step from MLS to the intensity of life at Rangers is a big one. New country. New climate. New type of football. McInnes is under no illusions about that, but he is convinced Makhanya has the raw tools to handle it.
"And while he's coming from the MLS, to a different country and a different type of football, we feel he's got the attributes that can cope with that."
