Rangnick–Schöttel Rift Signals End of ÖFB Era
The fault lines have been visible for months. Now they are about to crack the Austrian Football Association wide open.
According to Austrian newspapers Kurier and Krone, Peter Schöttel’s future as sporting director will be on the line at a decisive supervisory board meeting on Friday, with his departure from the ÖFB increasingly viewed as only a matter of time.
At the heart of the crisis: a relationship with head coach Ralf Rangnick that insiders describe as shattered beyond repair.
Broken partnership at the top
Schöttel has already been pushed to the sidelines by the federation, a clear signal of where the power now lies. The alliance that was supposed to anchor Austria’s sporting structure has collapsed, and those close to the camp no longer even try to hide it.
Marc Janko, former international and now a pundit with Sky, underlined just how deep the divide runs. Speaking about the turmoil, he said: “If you ask around behind the scenes, then it is not hugely surprising.”
The former striker painted a picture of a sporting director effectively cut out of the loop.
“With Schöttel and Ralf Rangnick, it did not really work properly,” Janko said. “It is indeed the case that for some time Rangnick, in all the matters that are important to him, has not been doing that via Peter, but via other people.”
In other words: the coach has been running the big decisions through different channels. Once that happens, trust is gone. And in a modern national setup, when trust disappears at the top, one of the two usually follows.
Success on the pitch, turmoil off it
The timing is brutal. Schöttel, now 59, has presided over one of the most successful sporting periods in the ÖFB’s recent history.
He joined the federation in 2017 as U19 coach and was promoted to overall sporting director just two months later. From there, Austria’s trajectory bent upwards.
The national team qualified for the European Championship in back-to-back cycles, reaching the last 16 in both 2021 and 2024. For a nation that had spent long stretches on the fringes of major tournaments, it marked a genuine step forward.
The high point came last summer: Austria reached a World Cup finals for the first time in 28 years. The run ended in the round of 32 against eventual world champions Spain, but the symbolic weight of simply being there again was enormous. It was the kind of milestone federations like to build entire strategies – and careers – around.
Now that very architect is on the verge of being shown the door, not because of results, but because the two most powerful figures in the sporting department can no longer work together.
The favourite to replace Schöttel
While the official verdict on Schöttel’s future will only be delivered after Friday’s meeting, the ÖFB has already started looking ahead.
No successor has been formally confirmed. Yet Krone reports that one name has moved to the front of the internal queue: Sebastian Prödl.
The former Werder Bremen defender, a seasoned Bundesliga professional in his playing days, has been running the ÖFB’s youth department since 2024. His work there is said to be highly valued within the association. Colleagues praise his structure, his communication, his understanding of the federation’s pathways.
But one factor stands above all others.
Prödl is believed to enjoy an exceptionally strong relationship with Rangnick. After the breakdown with Schöttel, that alone could prove decisive. In a system increasingly shaped by the German coach’s ideas and authority, the ÖFB appears determined to avoid another power struggle at the top.
If Friday confirms Schöttel’s exit, Austrian football will close the book on a remarkably successful chapter – and hand the pen to a new sporting director whose first task will be simple and unforgiving: keep the results coming while keeping Rangnick firmly onside.
