Raphinha Returns to Barcelona Camp with a Mission
Raphinha slipped through the doors at St George’s Park on Monday with little fuss, but his arrival carries heavy weight for FC Barcelona’s season.
Summer break over, the Brazilian winger has rejoined Hansi Flick’s squad in England as the Catalans crank up their pre-season work ahead of their La Liga opener against Elche on 23 August. Boots back on, cameras tracking his every move, this is more than just another player reporting for duty. It’s the return of a man Barcelona once built their entire attacking threat around.
Back from a bruising World Cup
He comes in from a World Cup that never really got going for him. Raphinha started Brazil’s first two group-stage matches, only for his tournament to unravel after 39 minutes of the second game against Haiti, when a thigh injury to his right leg forced him off.
He never made it back onto the pitch. Brazil never made it deep into the tournament, falling to Norway in the round of 16. For a player who had arrived on the global stage as one of Europe’s most electric wide forwards, it was a bitterly flat chapter.
Barcelona, though, are not dwelling on that. Inside the camp, the expectation is clear: he is back fully recovered and ready to work from day one.
No rush into the friendlies
Even so, there will be no immediate showreel. According to journalist Nil Sola, Raphinha is unlikely to feature in Barcelona’s first two friendlies of the summer, against Birmingham City on 31 July and Preston North End on 3 August.
He has only just joined up with the group. Flick and his staff know exactly what he can do when fully tuned, and they are not about to gamble that for a few pre-season minutes in England. The temptation to throw him straight in is obvious. The plan is to resist it.
Flick wants his Ballon d’Or contender back
Raphinha’s real battle lies beyond these early friendlies. His target, shared openly with Flick, is to rediscover the level he hit in the 2024-25 campaign, when his numbers pushed him into the conversation for the Ballon d’Or.
That season under Flick was the high point of his career so far: 34 goals and 26 assists in 57 games across all competitions. Those are superstar figures, the kind that drag a team through bad days and define big nights.
With him on the pitch, Barcelona attacked with greater edge and pressed with a snarl that suited Flick’s ideas. The team looked quicker, braver, more vertical. Opponents knew exactly where the danger lived and still struggled to contain it.
Then came last season, and with it the interruptions. Hamstring problems cut deep into his year. He managed just 33 appearances, still scoring 21 goals but never building the same relentless rhythm. Every time he looked ready to explode again, another setback.
A tailored plan for a decisive season
This is why his re-entry into the group in England comes with a clear, personalised roadmap. Barcelona’s new head of physical preparation, Benjamin Kugel, has drawn up an individual programme specifically for Raphinha.
The goal is simple and ruthless: keep him on the pitch, at full throttle, for the entire campaign.
The work will be detailed and demanding. Conditioning tailored to his explosive style. Load carefully managed around the hamstrings that betrayed him last year. Extra sessions, close monitoring, constant fine-tuning. If the plan works, Barcelona regain not just a winger, but one of Europe’s most influential attackers.
Flick knows what that version of Raphinha looks like. La Liga does too. The question now is whether the Brazilian can turn this quiet return at St George’s Park into the launchpad for another season at Ballon d’Or level.
