Rasmus Ankersen Steps Down as Southampton Director

Rasmus Ankersen has stepped down from his role as a director at Southampton, drawing a line under his formal day-to-day involvement at St Mary’s while remaining firmly tied to the club’s ownership.

The 42-year-old Dane, a key figure within the Sport Republic structure, will continue as a co-owner of the Championship side but no longer sit on the board. It marks a reshaping rather than a clean break, a shift in influence rather than an exit.

His reduced presence at Southampton has been evident for some time. Ankersen has been serving as president of Turkish club Goztepe, another team under the Sport Republic umbrella, and that commitment has naturally pulled him away from the south coast. Even so, he has stayed plugged into Southampton’s recruitment operation, offering input on the talent pipeline that has long been central to his reputation.

That reputation was forged in England at Brentford. Between 2015 and 2021, Ankersen helped drive the Bees’ data-led rise, a period that culminated in promotion to the Premier League. His work there turned heads across Europe and laid much of the groundwork for his move into the multi-club model with Sport Republic.

Sport Republic itself is fronted by Serbian businessman Dragan Solak, who holds the majority stake in Southampton. The group has built a growing network, with controlling interests not only in Saints but also in French side Valenciennes and Goztepe in Turkey.

While Southampton chase a return to the Premier League, Goztepe are battling at the other end of the spectrum, currently sitting bottom of the Turkish Super Lig. It leaves Ankersen’s focus spread across clubs with sharply contrasting realities — one eye on promotion, the other on survival.
