RB Leipzig's Goalkeeper Battle: World Cup Star Seeks Starting Role

The battle for the No. 1 shirt at RB Leipzig has a clear challenger – and he’s arriving with World Cup pedigree and a point to prove.

The Norwegian goalkeeper has just come off a standout international tournament, where he produced 16 saves and a statement moment: a penalty stop against Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes in the round of 16. Those performances now form the backbone of his claim that he is ready to start week in, week out in the Bundesliga.

Speaking to Bulinews.com, the keeper made his case with quiet certainty rather than bluster.

"I know I'm going to get my playing time, so I'm not very worried about that. I demonstrated my level and my qualities in the World Cup. I think that spoke enough about me. That's why they signed me and that's why they want to use me as well."

He has been here before. His first spell at Red Bull Arena brought trophies, memories that still drive him.

"It's something very positive that I still remember with pride," he said, recalling the domestic silverware that marked his initial stint in Leipzig colours.

Now comes the hard part: turning reputation into a starting role.

Pre-season will be his proving ground. Every session, every friendly, a small audition in front of the coaching staff as Leipzig build towards their Bundesliga opener – an away trip to Borussia Monchengladbach on August 29.
