Real Madrid enter a dangerous stretch of their season with no room for error and no time to breathe.
Three points off leaders Barcelona and stuck in second place, Jose Mourinho’s side now face three games in nine days that will say plenty about their title credentials. It starts with Rayo Vallecano at the Bernabeu, then a quick turnaround at Elche on Tuesday, before the intensity spikes with a capital derby against Atletico Madrid.

Mourinho’s squad gets its pieces back
The mood around Valdebebas has lifted. After a patched‑up squad faced Inter, Mourinho finally sees bodies returning.
Aurelien Tchouameni is back at his disposal, a major boost in the middle of the pitch. Marco Asensio has rejoined full training after an ill‑timed injury and is again in the frame. Thiago also returns to contention, giving Mourinho fresh legs in an area of the pitch that will be tested heavily over the next week and a half.
The timing matters. The Inter game arrived with Real stripped by suspension: Arda Guler, Eduardo Camavinga and Bernardo Silva were all unavailable after red cards in last season’s Champions League campaign. Now, as the calendar tightens, Mourinho finally has options instead of headaches.
The big question: who partners Bernardo Silva?
The main dilemma sits in midfield. Mourinho must decide who lines up alongside Bernardo Silva: Eduardo Camavinga or Federico Valverde.
Valverde has been the workhorse of Real’s season so far. He has started all four La Liga matches and one Champions League game, barely coming off the pitch. The Uruguayan has missed just over 20 minutes in total, substituted in the 77th minute against Malaga and withdrawn for the final eight minutes against Real Betis.
He never stops. Mourinho knows he has to.
The Portuguese coach has been careful with workloads early in the campaign, conscious of the relentless schedule ahead. That same caution is visible with Bernardo Silva. The playmaker started Real’s first two league matches, then came off the bench against Malaga and Betis, totalling 205 out of a possible 360 La Liga minutes – around 57% of the available time.
It’s a deliberate pattern. Mourinho does not want to overload his compatriot now and lose him when the season reaches its decisive stretch. So the choice is clear and crucial: keep Valverde’s engine running, or inject Camavinga’s energy and allow the Uruguayan a breather.

Arda Guler’s chance to stake his claim
Up front, another storyline returns. Arda Guler is expected to come back into the starting XI against Rayo after missing Real’s Champions League opener.
The Turk has started the season well, but he lives in the most ruthless part of the pitch. Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham are locked into Mourinho’s plans and are again expected to start. That leaves Guler fighting for every available minute, every loose role, every opening between the lines.
Nothing is guaranteed in that frontline. Every appearance becomes an audition.
If he wants to stay among Mourinho’s first-choice options, Guler has to turn these chances into statements, especially with competition so fierce across the attacking positions.
Defence set, Cucurella settles
At the back, Mourinho is unlikely to tinker much. Stability is the word.
Thibaut Courtois will start in goal. In front of him, the same back four that faced Inter is expected: Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, Dean Huijsen and Marc Cucurella.
Cucurella, in particular, looks to have secured a more permanent place in Mourinho’s thinking, settling into the line and offering consistency on the flank. The rest of the defence continues to enjoy the coach’s trust as he seeks continuity in a period when everything else around the team is rotating.
Diaz waits, bench loaded
The options on the bench underline Real’s depth. According to Spanish newspaper AS, Brahim Diaz is likely to start among the substitutes, alongside Yan Diomande, as Mourinho leans on the wealth of choices now available.
That leaves Real Madrid’s expected line-up against Rayo Vallecano looking largely defined, with one glaring question mark in the middle of the park.
