Real Madrid will walk into their first Champions League night of the season without two of José Mourinho’s most trusted lieutenants – and it changes everything.
Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva are both suspended for the clash with Inter, a double absence Antonio Romero confirmed on “El Larguero” on Cadena SER. Bellingham at the heart of the solution
The most significant shift, Romero argued, will likely drag Jude Bellingham a step deeper, anchoring a remodelled midfield rather than floating closer to goal.
“It’s natural for Bellingham to drop back a little,” Romero said, underlining the weight of the occasion. This is not a group-stage dead rubber in November. It is Real Madrid’s first Champions League appearance of the season, the competition that defines the club and its managers. As Romero put it, in this tournament “there’s no room for experimentation”.
Mourinho does have alternatives on paper. New signing Sergio Martinez could be thrown straight into the fire. Trent Alexander-Arnold could be pushed inside from full-back to add passing range and control. Both options have their appeal.
Yet the feeling around the club, as Romero framed it, is clear: if there is a gap to plug in the biggest games, Bellingham is the one who plugs it, whatever his role on the teamsheet and whatever his condition.
Physically, Romero insisted, there is no doubt. “He is at peak physical fitness,” he said, even if the Englishman looked “a little tired” in the last match. That, Romero argued, is the inevitable price of the volume of work Bellingham gets through for Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius and the rest of his teammates. He runs for them all. Bruno Alimani, also speaking on “El Larguero”, highlighted the Nerazzurri’s blistering opening to the season: they are “one of only two teams in Italy to have won all three of their matches” so far. That kind of start does not happen by accident.
Alimani pointed to a core that has already carried Inter to two major finals in the last four years. Alessandro Bastoni, Nicolò Barella, Lautaro Martínez and Hakan Çalhanoğlu form the backbone. Yet stability does not mean perfection. Alimani also flagged what he sees as a clear drop in the level of Inter’s back line.
“I think their level has dropped slightly, especially in goalkeeping and defence,” he said. Yann Sommer has gone. Josep Martinez has come in, but, as Alimani noted, he does not fit the profile of an undisputed No. 1 for a club that expects to compete at Champions League level.
The same doubts creep into the defence. “In defence, it is true that they signed players such as Akanji and Stones, both of whom left Manchester City under less than ideal circumstances,” Alimani added. Experience, yes. But also question marks.
Lautaro leads a dangerous front line
If Inter’s goalkeeper and back four still need to convince, their attack does not.
Alimani underlined the momentum surging through their forward line. Lautaro Martínez scored twice in their last outing and walks into this tie in ruthless form. Inter’s win over Napoli was not just important for the table; it injected adrenaline into a dressing room that already believed.
“Lautaro scored two goals in the last match, and they are coming off a thrilling win over Napoli, which means they will be in high spirits,” Alimani said.
So the stage is set: a Real Madrid side forced to redraw its midfield without Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva, leaning harder than ever on Jude Bellingham’s versatility and engine, against an Inter team with a proven spine, an unsettled back line and a striker who cannot stop scoring.
On the first European night of the season, one question hangs over the tie: will Real’s reshaped core hold firm against Inter’s surge, or will those early cracks at the back and in goal be the ones that decide it?
