Real Madrid Nears Diomande Transfer in Historic Bundesliga Deal
Real Madrid are pushing a huge transfer over the line – and in the process are about to rewrite a chapter of Bundesliga history.
According to Sky, negotiations between Los Blancos and RB Leipzig for 19-year-old winger Diomande are in the final stretch, with the Spanish giants expected to pay between €130 million and €140 million. At that price, the Ivorian would become the second-most expensive sale ever out of the Bundesliga, behind only Ousmane Dembele’s €148m move from Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona.
Not long ago, the fee on the table was “only” €120m. The market moved, Leipzig held their nerve, and Madrid kept coming.
Madrid wait on board approval
Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs has already reported a verbal agreement on the framework of the deal. Sky, though, are still holding back from calling it completely done. One final hurdle remains: the board in Madrid must sign off on the transfer this afternoon.
Once that happens, the saga that has dominated recent weeks could finally end with Diomande in white.
The path to this point has been anything but smooth.
Training camp twist and a transfer guru under fire
On Wednesday, Diomande travelled to RB Leipzig’s training camp in Saalfelden, Austria. Officially, the 19-year-old had reported sick before departure on Saturday and then joined up with the squad after recovering from an infection.
Real Madrid had hoped to avoid exactly that scenario. Their plan was simple: pull the winger out early, fly him straight to the Spanish capital, and put him through a medical. Instead, negotiations dragged, Leipzig didn’t blink, and Diomande boarded the bus to Austria.
The delay left one of the biggest names in the transfer world exposed. Fabrizio Romano had already described the deal as done more than a week ago, triggering a wave of criticism when the move stubbornly refused to cross the finish line.
RB sporting director Marcel Schäfer did not hide his irritation when he spoke on Sky on Tuesday.
“When we have something to announce, we will do so. One or two transfer experts already described it seven or 10 days ago as ‘done’ or ‘Here we go’. But that is simply not the case. A lot goes into it. It is not that far yet,” Schäfer said, underlining how complex this operation had become.
The message was clear: Leipzig would control the narrative, not social media.
Bayern, Liverpool, PSG all beaten to the punch
The scale of this transfer is not just financial. It is also symbolic. Diomande has been on the radar of Europe’s elite for months, long before last season ended.
Liverpool tracked him. Bayern Munich weighed up a move. Paris Saint-Germain, reportedly his preferred destination at one stage, also explored the possibility of signing him.
Real Madrid are now set to win that race.
The Spanish club appear unfazed by the potential aftershocks. And there could be plenty.
Agent war in the background
For months, an intense advisers’ dispute has rumbled behind the scenes of this deal. Two agencies, Maxidel Management and Roc Nation, both believe they have legitimate claims around Diomande’s transfer.
Maxidel Management, who oversaw his move from Leganes to RB Leipzig last summer, are said to consider themselves still entitled to a share of any future sale. Diomande’s new camp at Roc Nation see it differently.
If the deal between Real Madrid and Leipzig goes through at the figures now being discussed, FIFA are likely to take a close look at the case. The battle over commissions and rights could continue long after the player has swapped Saxony for Spain.
From no-name to nine-figure asset
The size of this fee becomes even more striking when you rewind just one year.
Diomande arrived in Leipzig in the summer of 2025 as a relative unknown, signed from Leganes for around €20m after only 10 competitive appearances for the Spanish club. The fee raised eyebrows at the time. Leipzig were accused of gambling.
They knew what they were doing.
In his first season in Germany, the winger exploded: 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 competitive matches. Pace, directness, end product – the full package. Within months, he had gone from “who?” to one of the most coveted young forwards in Europe.
Now Leipzig stand on the brink of turning that €20m punt into a nine-figure jackpot, while Real Madrid prepare to add another marquee talent to a squad already stacked with youthful star power.
If the board in Madrid give the green light this afternoon, the Bundesliga will lose one of its brightest attractions, and a 19-year-old from Ivory Coast will walk into the Santiago Bernabéu as the latest symbol of Real’s refusal to sit still in a changing European landscape.
