Real Madrid's Playmaker Battle: Guler vs Bellingham

Real Madrid are bracing for one of the fiercest selection battles of their season, and it’s not on the flanks or at the back. It’s right at the heart of Jose Mourinho’s new project: the playmaker’s seat behind Kylian Mbappe.

There is only room for one. Arda Guler or Jude Bellingham.

According to Spanish outlet “Mundo Deportivo”, Mourinho’s blueprint for this Madrid side leans heavily on a double attacking midfield axis just off Mbappe, the crucial bridge between the engine room and the finisher. For months, that zone looked like Bellingham’s natural territory, almost a formality after his exploits in previous campaigns.

Then pre-season ripped up the script.

Bellingham returned late from World Cup duty, his rhythm understandably off. Guler did not wait. The Turk attacked the opportunity, turning the warm-up games into his own personal showcase and emerging as one of Madrid’s standout performers of the summer.

Mourinho initially used him deeper, as a conventional midfielder. It wasn’t enough. Guler’s touch, vision and confidence forced a rethink. Pushed higher into the attacking midfield role, he exploded, stitching moves together, demanding the ball, and outstripping every expectation around him.

That run of form has changed the internal hierarchy. Training sessions and friendlies have pointed in one clear direction: Guler now sits ahead of Bellingham in Mourinho’s pecking order.

The latest indications from the club suggest Guler is on course to start in Real Madrid’s opening league match against Espanyol on 22 August, occupying that coveted slot behind Mbappe. Bellingham, once seen as the automatic choice, suddenly finds himself chasing, not leading.

For the Englishman, the message is blunt. To reclaim that role, he will have to dislodge a teammate in full flow and convince Mourinho that the playmaker’s throne at Madrid still belongs to him.
