Real Madrid–Rodri Transfer Talks Stall Over Contract Demands
Real Madrid’s push to prise Rodri away from Manchester City has hit a hard stop, with negotiations over personal terms collapsing and the operation now effectively frozen, according to Fichajes.
For weeks, this looked like one of the defining transfers of the summer. Fresh from being named player of the tournament at the World Cup, the 30-year-old was open to a return to Spain, convinced that his cycle in England was coming to a natural end. Madrid, under new head coach Jose Mourinho, had identified him as the cornerstone of a rebuilt midfield. The fit seemed obvious.
Then the numbers arrived. And everything changed.
Contract demands clash with Madrid’s proposal
Rodri’s camp had gone into talks seeking a four-year deal, a long-term commitment that would carry him deep into his thirties and reflect both his status and recent international exploits. Madrid’s first proposal fell well short of those expectations, particularly on wages, and the tone of discussions shifted quickly.
What began as a high-profile courtship has, in recent hours, turned into a tense standoff. Gap widens between City and Madrid

City value Rodri between €65m and €75m, a price that reflects his importance to Pep Guardiola’s structure and the length of his current deal, which runs until 30 June 2027. Madrid, by contrast, had hoped to close the transfer closer to €60m, a figure that would leave room to accommodate the player’s wage demands inside their existing structure.
That double gap – on both the contract and the transfer fee – has left the operation stuck. Time is not yet gone, but the window is shrinking. The deadline at the end of August looms larger with every day that passes without progress.
Mourinho’s ideal pivot on ice
For Mourinho, the frustration is obvious. He specifically requested a central midfielder capable of organising Madrid’s build-up play, someone who could sit as a single pivot or operate in a double pivot depending on the game state. Rodri ticked every box: positional discipline, passing range, tactical intelligence, big-game pedigree.
This summer also looked like one of City’s last optimal chances to cash in before the Spaniard enters the final year of his contract. On paper, the timing aligned perfectly for all three parties.
But City are under no pressure to sell. The Premier League champions are financially secure and perfectly prepared to keep their midfield anchor unless two conditions are met: Rodri formally asks to leave, and a bid arrives that matches their valuation. So far, neither has happened.
Madrid at a crossroads
Everything now hinges on Madrid’s next move. If they truly want Rodri as the anchor of Mourinho’s new project, they will have to break the deadlock on both fronts: improve the wage package to satisfy the player and push their transfer offer closer to City’s demands.
If they don’t, the saga simply fizzles out. Rodri stays in England, continuing as the heartbeat of City’s midfield, or he waits to see whether another Liga club can muster a late, credible alternative.
For Madrid, the question is blunt: do they stretch their financial limits for the midfielder Mourinho considers ideal, or walk away and gamble on finding that level of control and authority somewhere else before the window slams shut?
