Gonzalo was a prime target for Fulham’s Álvaro Arbeloa, who reportedly paid $46.1 million (€40 million) plus $11.5 million (€10 million) for Castilla talent César Palacios.

Real Madrid received a solid sum for both players and then replaced Gonzalo with Espí at a lower cost, effectively making a profit. The club gains a natural No. 9 who can fill a role similar to Joselu, offering impact off the bench and starting opportunities in cup competitions to aid Mourinho in squad rotation—something that was difficult under Arbeloa.
