Referee Injured in Pre-Season Friendly in France
A pre-season friendly in eastern France turned ugly on Saturday when referee Mathilde Demoncay suffered a concussion after being knocked to the ground while trying to break up a brawl between players.
The 26-year-old official was in charge of a warm-up match between French side Metz and Dutch club Fortuna Sittard at Schlossberg Stadium in Forbach when tempers boiled over late in the first half.
What had been a routine summer run-out snapped in the 40th minute. A seemingly standard shirt-tug between two opponents escalated into a confrontation, with players from both teams rushing in and crowding around the flashpoint.
Demoncay stepped into the middle, attempting to separate the players and restore control. Instead, she was caught in the chaos.
Video circulating on social media shows the referee being knocked off balance in the melee and crashing heavily to the turf, right in front of a large pitchside sign bearing a bitterly ironic message: “Respect the referee.”
She stayed down, clutching her arm, as assistant referees, security staff and medical personnel sprinted onto the pitch. The match paused for several minutes while they treated her and tried to calm the situation.
Despite the heavy fall, Demoncay initially chose to continue. When play resumed, she moved to the touchline and carried on in the second part of the half as an assistant referee instead of the central official.
By half-time, though, the damage told. Diagnosed with a concussion, she left the field and did not return, with another assistant stepping in to take over her duties.
On the pitch, Metz went on to win the friendly 3-1 as both clubs continued preparations for their new campaigns. Off it, the incident overshadowed the scoreline.
In the match report on their website, Fortuna Sittard referred to the clash and Demoncay’s injury only as a “remarkable moment,” offering no further detail. Metz made no mention of the episode in their own coverage.
A summer game meant to fine-tune tactics and fitness instead left the stark image of a young referee lying on the grass beneath a banner demanding respect. For a sport that insists it wants better protection for match officials, that picture will linger far longer than the result.
