Rodri’s Move to Barcelona: A New Era with Number 16
Rodri’s Barcelona move is all but done – and he already knows how he wants to look in blaugrana.
Barcelona have reached a full agreement with Manchester City to bring the Spanish midfielder back to La Liga, with only the official announcement missing. The deal is set at 60 million euros fixed, plus a potential 16 million in bonuses and variables, according to aligned reports. Rodri will sign a four-year contract worth more than 13 million euros net per season, a salary that immediately places him among the club’s top earners.
The money is huge. The symbolism might matter just as much.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Rodri specifically requested the number 16 shirt for his new adventure at Barcelona – the same number he has worn throughout his time at Manchester City and with the Spanish national team. It is the number that has followed him through the peak of his career, and he wants it to follow him onto the pitch at the Spotify Camp Nou.
There was one obstacle: it already belonged to Fermin Lopez.
According to Romano, the young Barcelona midfielder agreed to step aside. Fermin will switch to the number 7 shirt, freeing up the 16 for the incoming signing and underlining the hierarchy that Rodri’s arrival will bring to the dressing room.
Barcelona are expected to confirm both the transfer and the shirt number when they finally make the move official. All signs point in the same direction: when Rodri walks out at the Spotify Camp Nou for the first time as a Barcelona player, the “16” that defined his Manchester City era will be stitched across his back once again.
