That picture has changed in a hurry.
According to The Athletic, Barcelona have now opened talks with Rodri’s camp, and the player is said to be genuinely tempted by the idea of joining Hansi Flick’s new project this summer. Discussions with Manchester City are also under way, and if the English champions give the green light, Barça are expected to accelerate and try to seal a deal quickly.
The pressure is starting to tell in Madrid’s offices.

At present, he is fully counting only on Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde and Arda Guler for that role heading into the 2026-27 campaign. After already missing out on Enzo Fernandez, Rodri had become the standout target, the player around whom Mourinho could lock down the centre of the pitch for years.
Losing him would hurt. Losing him to Barcelona would sting even more.
The prospect of Rodri anchoring Flick’s midfield, rather than Mourinho’s, would tilt the tactical balance between the two giants in a very specific area of the pitch where games are often decided.
