Rodri Joins Barcelona: A Major Signing for La Liga

Barcelona have landed one of the game's most complete midfielders, confirming the signing of Rodri from Manchester City in a deal worth around £65m.

The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner has agreed a four-year contract at the Nou Camp, taking him back to La Liga and Spanish football for the first time since he left Atletico Madrid for City in 2019.

A serial winner leaves Manchester

Rodri, 30, walks away from City with a legacy carved into the club’s modern history. Across seven seasons he played 298 times and stacked up 12 major trophies: four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups and, crowning it all, the 2023 Champions League.

Injuries disrupted his final two campaigns in England, but he arrived at this summer’s World Cup looking like the old Rodri again. He did more than that. He dominated the tournament, drove Spain to their second world title and left with the player of the tournament award.

The goodbye to Manchester carried the tone of a man who knew how much had changed around him as well as on the pitch.

"I am leaving the club with a huge sense of pride about what we have achieved and gratitude too for so many amazing memories," he told City supporters in a farewell message.

"What we have done together in these years is something both very special and unforgettable.

"City didn't just make me grow as a player. They made me grow as a human. I saw my brother graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University. I could see my girlfriend working for the NHS. Manchester shaped my whole life."

Barcelona beat Madrid to his signature

Rodri had entered the final 12 months of the contract he signed in 2022. City wanted to tie him down again, but talks stalled and never produced an agreement. That opened a narrow window. Europe’s giants were never going to ignore it.

Real Madrid initially looked in pole position. A move from former Atletico to the Bernabeu would have been loaded with history, but not unprecedented. Back in March, speaking to Spanish radio about the prospect of joining Madrid, Rodri did not close the door.

"There are more players who have taken that path. Not directly, but over time. You can't turn down the best clubs in the world," he said.

For a while, it felt like a familiar story: City star, contract running down, Madrid circling. Then the plot twisted. Real ended their interest, and Barcelona – who already had Rodri’s approval to start talks with City, according to BBC Sport – pushed hard.

City rejected an opening offer of £38.5m. The Catalan club came back, and this time they went big. An agreement was finally struck at a figure well above that first bid, clearing the way for one of the standout transfers of the summer.

On Monday, Rodri flew into Barcelona and, walking through the airport, called it a "dream" to play for the club.

A changing of the guard at City

His departure continues a significant reshaping of Enzo Maresca’s squad. Rodri is the third long-serving player to leave this summer after John Stones and Bernardo Silva both exited at the end of their contracts.

Silva has joined Real Madrid, setting up the tantalising prospect of facing his former midfield partner in El Clasico.

City have not stopped there. Defenders Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji have also been sold, while goalkeeper James Trafford has moved on, stripping away yet more of the spine that helped define their era of dominance.

The response has been aggressive in the market. City have already spent £116m on England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and are in advanced talks with Lille over teenage Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. BBC Sport also understands they have not abandoned their pursuit of Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have finally landed the metronome they have craved since the peak years of Sergio Busquets. The question now is simple: how quickly can Rodri bend La Liga – and Europe – to his rhythm in blaugrana?
