Roma Leads Race for Mason Greenwood as Personal Terms Finalized

Roma have pushed themselves to the front of the queue for Mason Greenwood, striking an agreement on personal terms with the Marseille forward as they look to reshape their attack before the new season.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the 24-year-old has given the green light to a move to the Stadio Olimpico. The proposed deal is structured to grow with his impact in Serie A: a starting net salary of €4 million, topped up by performance-related bonuses, rising over the course of the contract.

For Roma’s ownership, this is a statement pursuit. Greenwood has been identified as a priority target to add cutting edge and versatility in the final third. The club’s sporting department has moved quickly to lock in the player’s side of the deal, but the hard part now begins.

Marseille are holding out for around €55 million. Roma’s opening proposal is understood to sit closer to €40m. That gap is significant, and negotiations between the clubs are ongoing as they search for a figure that satisfies both boards.

Pressure is building in France. Marseille face financial concerns and reports of a potential threat to their participation in next season’s Europa League, a backdrop that inevitably sharpens the need to bring money in. Under those conditions, a substantial offer for Greenwood is difficult to ignore, even after his productive spell in Ligue 1.

Signs around the player point in the same direction. Reports in France suggest Greenwood has already handed back the keys to his house in Aix, a small but telling detail that hints at preparation for a move away from the country.

For much of the summer, it looked as though that move would take him to Turkey. Fenerbahce emerged as the most likely destination when presidential candidate Hakan Safi publicly tied part of his campaign to landing Greenwood, even claiming to have an agreement in place through to 2030.

That storyline collapsed with one election result. Safi lost out to Aziz Yildirim, and with him went the proposal built around Greenwood. The Istanbul route has effectively closed, and with Fenerbahce’s interest cooling, Roma have stepped into the space with conviction.

The Italian club are now widely seen as the leading contenders for Greenwood’s signature. The player’s reported preference is clear, the personal package is in place, and Roma’s need for a high-impact attacker is no secret.

Everything now turns on the talks with Marseille. Roma are expected to keep chipping away at the French club’s valuation in the coming weeks, aiming to bring the fee closer to their €40m bracket before pre-season gets fully underway.

Any breakthrough will echo beyond Rome and Marseille. Manchester United, Greenwood’s former club, are understood to hold a sell-on clause from his previous move and would stand to benefit financially if the two sides finally meet in the middle.
